Well I just got done doing 2 outs and one in. One was a manual car and one was an automatic car. I took them both out, and switched them and only got one in so far. Me personally, I would come out the top on both of them, but the manual is a BITC*, let me tell you. you have to take the motor mount bracket and a/c pump off the front of the motor, and it is a TIGHT fit. But the automatic out of the top was SIMPLE, came right up. Going back in, the auto was easy, just dropped it right in, bolted it up to the tranny, bingo. Now when i put the motor back into the manual car, I am deffinatly going in from the bottom, cuz the way it came out, I dont see how I will get it back in honestly. I pretty much have every single bolt and bracket fresh on my mind, so if you need any help, add me to msn or email me.... codyw_9@hotmail.com

I pulled my 2.4 with manual trans attached out the top. It is a very tight fit. Like Fst Cavy said, be sure you take off the lower engine mount bracket - though it will come out with it attached too.

Yea, if you use a damn crow bar. Oh I know for a fact it would have came out if I forced it, but, no way would I want to bend the shaft coming outta the tranny, even the SLIGHTEST bit, that wouldnt be cool.

I pulled the timing side of the engine much higher and had a friend help me guide the engine out. It came out without force but was very tight.

Did you unbolt the tranny mount to let the tranny tilt up, I didnt so that is why it was even more tight. I understand taht you pulled the timing side up higher, same as me, you have to, but....if u pulled it up far enough to get it out wihtout unbolting the tranny mount, u had to be putting some serious stress on the tranny input shaft. I think that is what it is called.

I will be pulling the motor next week in my 2.4L auto. I was thinking about pulling the axle shafts out and removing the engine and trans at the same time. I will take the hood off the car. I'd rather not pull the tranny if I don't have to. If I can just unbolt the bellhousing and then leave the tranny in there and hook up a chain to the two lift hooks on the engine and slowly pull it out with a cherry picker that'd be the easiest. Then I can roll the car out of the garage while I go through the engine.

With an auto is it cool to leave the trans in and bolted down?

On the auto, it is VERY easy to pull the motor less the trans. Unbolt the bellhousing and the bolts on the timing side(front) where the tranny connects to. Leave the top bolt in the bellhousing so the tranny doesnt fall right away. Chain up the engine, pull out that bolt, crack the bellhousing off the motor and up she comes. Then either block up the tranny or stretch a beam across the strut towers and put a rope or a strap or something to hold up the tranny to take the pressure off the cv joints. The auto is very easy, like I said earlier, any questions, I would be more than happy to help you. Email me and if needed ill send you my cell number to call and give you some advice.

ill 2.4 autos all day long , they are cake to do

the motor will come straight up , all you gotta do is undo the 3 bolts that hold the tq conveter the the flexplate , you axcess then from the starter hole , easier with the intake off

if i take my time i can pull it in about 4 hours , including lunch and BS'n

pulled a 5 speed 2.4 out the bottom in 2 hours...... all hand tools, no lift......

SOOOOO much easier going out the bottom....... So much so, I do all of them out the bottom now (2.2 Eco, 2.2 ohv, 2.4, 2.3, 5speed, auto)

Going back in is a bit more tricky, but still easier then going in the top....... just put it on a floor jack, and go straight up. Attach the upper Engine mount, then do the trans mounts, install the subframe, and lower mount. CAKE.

I HIGHLY doubt taht taking the auto out the bottom is easier....I really do...I'm not denying anything you say, but the auto comes strait out, absolutly no problem, so why mess wtih the subframe and all that crap. If you are taking out motor and trans, I can see why, but just the motor, I would DEFFINATLY recomment out the top, easy as sunday brunch. Not to argue, just voicing my opinion!! Speedracer...2 hours? Holy cow, did you have sweat coming off your forehead, haha, you had to be busting your nuts....unless it was just out, not in and out. I can see out in 2 hours. Good luck everybody.

I always pull the trans with the engine..... just makes it easier to put back in that way......

When I pulled the Engine/Trans on an auto out the top, the battery tray was in the way, and so was the brake master cylinder and ABS. Plus you need an engine hoist to go out the top, and I dont have one in my garage at home (I do out at my dad's).

As far as the 2 hours, we weren't really huffing it (GreenZ/Jake and I), just know where all the bolts and wires are. and that was just to pull it..... install takes a bit longer..... I hope to be installing my engine and trans this weekend.... so maybe I'll time it.
