K&N intake broke
Tuesday, January 31, 2006 2:29 PM
Anyone ever have this happen. My K&N intake broke. I barely noticed it today, no telling how long it has been like that. Also, where the intake connects to the throttle body, that bracket was loose and I assume it was sucking air through there too. When I took it off, it was all dirty in the inside.

Vibration can do all kinds of thing. Its just thin metal anyway. I wouldn't worry to much about the bracket.

HA!!!! Before I even looked at this thread, I knew exactly what it was about. Mine broke also, in THE EXACT SAME SPOT TOO, it must be a defect with the design or something.

No I can't weld, but I will just take my car to an exhaust shop. I'm sure they can weld it for me.

This is another reason not to buy an intake over $50. Why buy something not designed to deal with normal vibrations for $200+. you think they would have considered that in the price.

aluminum isn't too forgiving. i just made a post about that yesterday. i'm suprised more companies aren't making intakes out of steel and then powdercoat or anodize it. thought about making my own for this reason.

depending where the other end of the filter rests it may not be anything to worry about, at least it didn't break at the intake and leave a hole letting unfiltered air in your engine.

aluminum is a cheep metal, so it increased the company's profit margin. Also, with that intake, the coine filter hangs between the the battery and the driver side Strut tower, so you should be fine for the time being.

As i said, I'd JB weld that bracket back together and call it a day

when I busted my intake mount, it ws because of busted motor mount making the engin move and shake like crazy. So maybe u need to inspect your mounts possibly?

All intakes should be made of the same plastic that stock housing is made of. The "appeal" of a metal intake due to sound and the pretty paint simply just adds heat problems and durability problems.

Funny thing is, the aluminum intakes usually cost MORE then the plastic counterpart series (if both is offered for an application)

I would take a plastic tubed intake over a metal one any day of the week.

I think that when K&N designed the kit, they should have made that meal bracket arm shorter, and put in a rubber spacer like AEM does, to connect it to that point. The K&N kit has litterally no way to stop vibration damage. Still a nice kit though. Thats a shame.
