Ok this might be hard to explain and read the whole thing before you respond.
But I was thinking about performance exhaust catbacks. Now how would it help to get a 2.25 or a 2.5 or anything larger than stock if you are using a stock cat because the cat has a 2 inch (1 7/8 or what ever u guys call it) pipe coming out of it? I think of it this way if you had a straw hooked up to the sink that was 2 inches long with the watter runing thought it and you added 2 inchs of larger hose to it. How would it flow any better then just a 4 inch straw .
Dosent a piping system only flow as good as the smallest tubing in it?
I mean I understand upgrading a piping size if you have ahigh flow cat and a header to match the size . But could the preformance from a cat-back on a other wise stock exhaust system, Be just from the fact that it has better bends no resanatior/better flowing resanatior plus a much better flowing muffler. Pleese don't flame me. I just thought of this and it made sense to me. I was thinking about doing a custom exhaust system and i don't plan on replacing my cat.

Basicly what you just typed is common knowledge
but you have the right idea.
I mean to say you will get better performance keeping everything the same size.
Resonators don't restrict any type of airflow. 2 1/4" would be better suited for our motors. If you're going to upgrade your whole exhaust system, I'd do replace the cat as well because like you said, it only flows as good as the smallest point.
Basically, keep everything the same size and you should be fine.

There for if there were two cat backs one with 2 inch or with 2.5 inch with the same muffler/resionator setup and type of bends being used on a other wise stock exhaust system. The larger one would have no advantages and the 2 inch may actualy have advantage due to Velocity because it is all uniform size with the output of the catalic coverter! Again please don't flame just think about it. Because it seems stupid so have to make all sortas adapters to go from 2 inch to 2.25 or 2.5 if I am never going to change my cat.

Umm I guess...
My head hurts right now from all this pondering.

Have you seen the inside of a stock resantior Mr.NJHK. I happen to have one at my house off a cavalier infact and from the looks of it its doesn't look like it flows nearly as good a straight peice of pipe so if it doesn't flow as good then it would be a type of restriction wouldn't it?

Velocity is important... but realy only in the first bit of the header. You want enough "flow" of the exhaust gases so that it encourages more exhaust fumes to come out of the combustion chamber (scavenging!), but as long as the exhaust isn't horrendously small at the end or middle or whatever, it'll go just fine.
Backpressure is a myth. It is not required to make power. Velocity is what you want... fewer bends with less crush marks... nice smooth walls that encourage flow not stifle it. Free flowing exhaust components will make the most power.... but also produce the most noise.

It could be just the way from the factory they designed it. Aftermarket parts compare to OEM usually are better and try to correct the mistakes that OEM does, hence making them a better product.
