Quieting down the Exhaust
Tuesday, February 21, 2006 8:25 AM
Yep, its time for it.....damn thing is way too loud for me anymore, so I'm going with a resonator and different muffler.

I'm planning on getting a Dynomax Stainless Steel Resonater, and was wondering if a 25" one would fit under the car. I'm also stuck on what to get for a muffler, I was thinking of getting a Dynomax Super Turbo, but I am stuck on which one to get. I'm thinking of offset in/center out, but am not sure. If someone could help me out I would greatly appreciate it.

A 35" is about the longest that will fit, but it all depends on what is under there. Just get under the car and measure from the cat to the bend over the axle.

Mat I heard the flowmaster 40 series is a good quiet muffler.. Let me know if you go to Jegs soon, I need to get a 'certain' gauge that starts with a 'B' teehheetee

woah whitecavy........40 series (specially the delta ones) are pretty damn loud. actually, unless you specifically buy their race brand mufflers, i think the 40 delta series is the loudest they make. 50 series is a little more appropriate really, but still kinda loud.

Remember, he's trying to 'quite down his exhaust",
i've got a 5X8X18 magnaflow with a decent res on there and it's quite yet noticable on WOT. i'd suggest that and DEF against a flowmaster. They are just loud all the damn time. magnaflow will be makin its noise on acceleration and be almost silent while crusing. Magnaflow you have a lot of size options so you can def get a quite muff. just remember the larger they are the quitier.

Matt... I think White was being sarcastic... at least I hope he was... Cause if he thinks a 40 is quiet I'd hate to hear his exhaust....

^^ Umm for you two who commented if you RE read what I said. I said I "HEARD" as in I read on here. I've never heard that muffler for myself. It was just a suggestion.

Silver_00ZED24- I have the RK sport exhaust and it sounds pretty damn good. Thanks for your concern though smartass.

If you want a muffle Dynomax Superturbo may be your best bet. Witha Resonator will almost be stock. If you get a Camaro Dynomax Superturbo it will be louder. There are number of people with it. Any straight throught design regardless of brand will be loud some more than others. Those aftermarket muffler that claim to be under a certain DB gave resonators on those systems.

I used 2.5in Dynomax ST with 28in Thrush resonator for like 4 days.
Outside: sounded really good, mellow with a bass tone.
Inside: Huge interior resonance, enough to drive you crazy for a daily driver (especially accelerating and coasting in gear). On the highway in 5th it was ok.
After that I kept all my piping and resonator and put in the standard mufflers again. And I got my sanity back.

Funny enough, on my friend's sister's 2005 automatic Mitsubishi Galant, the same muffler I sold her is barely audible inside and out. To the point it is perfect. (for me)

That was my experience.

turbos really make the "ting" in the exhaust note go away, can also make your exhaust more quiet, I think thats what he was saying.

I can't tell you what a good choice is, but I can tell you a bad one. I purchased a magnaflow dual square tip muffler off of ebay brand new because my roommate has a similar one on his 2.3 Prelude which is one of the best sounding four cylinder exhausts I've heard, well mine looked good and claimed that it sounds good. I had a custom exhaust built with no cat or resonator, kinda knew what i had coming, and holy sh#t. It's the loudest thing in town, and I'm from Wyoming! There are atleast fifty beater trucks racing around at any given moment YEEHHHAAA!!!! and I'm quite sure they envy me. I'm not looking forward to my trip to South Dakota in March, I think I'm gonna buy some ear muffs for it.

Zstreet, yea you'd most likely wil want to go with a straight through muffler like magnaflow or borla. Flowmasters are chambered mufflers and are actually some of the worst flowing aftermarket mufflers there are. if you got a little money, and borla and your SC would sound like a billion bucks. borlas just sound damn wonderful especially AA BUT, they tend to be on the loud side, so the next step down from them are usually a magnaflow, it will sound nice and deep but just make sure that you get AT LEAST a 5X8X18 inch muffler. thats actually perfect for most people

i keep saying it over and over, 40 series deltaflows here and their far from loud... i'd say deep as @!#$... but they sound great... once summer is here and the cars back on the road i'll get video so u guys can finally here what a 40 series flowmasters sounds like on a cavy... @!#$ great...

I too am looking for a decent performance muffler. The stock muffler is gigantic! It measures 20"x11 1/2" X 5! I want the exhaust to remain looking stock, just with a bit more rumble to it. Would a Magnaflow 18" x8"x4" turbo muffler do the trick? I don't want loud either.

Here's an odd question.... with my side exit its annoyingly loud with a header, I dont have room for another muffler or even a larger muffler (using a flowmaster hushpower), has anyone used exhaust pipe inserts to quiet their cars down?

I was thinking in pair of Dynomax 16" bullet resonators and a Borla XL or a big ProXS, straight through muffler.

What about Borla mufflers about sound? I have some friends with Borla cat back in Mustangs and the sound and performance is really awesome.
