No, the harness is completely different, if you use the ecu from the eco, you'll also have to swap in a BCM, dash wiring, and cluster.

I always hate reading "motor swap" and "NEED HELP BIG TIME" in the same post ... Kinda makes me glad I'm sticking to my poor OHV until I move to the Cobalt SS.

We have done 2 pre 2000 J's. A 96 2.2 3 speed auto to a 2004 Ecotec 5 speed, and a 98 2200 3 speed auto to a 2004 Ecotec 5 speed. We are going to be doing another swap, but on a 2001 2200 5 speed.

well, not to offend the original poster, but usually people who need help big time during a motor swap are the ones who didn't do their homework before going thru with it. If you do research, explore, and make some educated evaluations and come to reasonable conclusions a motor swap isn't that difficult.

I did it on an 00+ car... pre 00 is a different story. its a MUCH more difficult task since the electrical system was redesigned in the last 5 years of production of the 3rd gen jbody... but it isn't impossible if you know what to expect and get advice from a reliable source

suncavi did it on his car.. he made a post somewhere about it with a write up, but I have no idea where to start looking for it.. you may want to PM him.

but if you do go thru with it...

Truly a pre 2000 swap is not that hard. Maybe it is because we have done 2 of them and know now. The last one we did we did it in 2 weekend, and that was stripping the donor car, and stripping the car getting the swap. We swapped all the wiring in the car, and had to hard wire the headlight harness from a pre 2000 to the body harness of the ecotec (so the pre 2000 headlights could be used). Swapped the gas tanks, fuel lines, welded in the tranny mounts, painted the engine bay, swapped most of the interior, swapped the A/C system. That is roughly what all is envolved, but it is early and I just got up. Oh of course the BCM, PCM.

I was the original poster of the swap faq Yes it can be done. I did it to my 97 cavalier. I myself like john researched and researched and then decided to go for it regardless of cost. I wanted that motor bad. I work as a mechanic and when i got home at 5 pm, I was working on it from 6 - 12 (midnight) for a week (7 days) Had the donor car stripped in 2 days, My car completely stripped in 2 days, and the other 3 putting the puzzle back together I saved myself the hassle from the pre 00+ cars and Just took the complete wiring harness from the whole car and installed it along with the gas tank, fuel lines, evap system, interior and of course the engine, ecu & bcm. Couldnt get the sucker to start at first (not the theft system) had a leaking o-ring on the fuel injector. 3 Days later The engine I bought blew, hole behind the water pump. (Car was brand spankin new but in a rollover that I got the engine out of possibly knocked something loose.

The salvage yard warrantied the engine and gave me a 1200 mile ecotec engine for 150 bucks. Best thing I had ever done for that car was to upgrade to that motor. Got so sick of the OHV's making the loud ticking from the pushrods it made me sick. Plus with all the support for the ecotec it makes a good engine to start off with a cool project.

Any questions with the swap you can email me at
