ok i have a 97 cavalier that i want to ecotec do i have to change the transmission and everything...i know this is prolly a lame question to some of u guys but ...its more help for me so id appreciate it .thanks
Yup everything under the hood. Find a rear ended one and take everything you can get.
Good Luck and keep us updated.
Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.
you'll be very pleased with an ecotec especially if you plan too boost. But if your doing a swap from a 2200 im assuming i would do a 2.4 swap due to the parts availability.. You can buy more parts for a 2.4 for a little cheaper and rebuilding it isnt as costly.

pre 2000 jbodies have to update the electrical system in the entire car in order to get the ecotec to function properly.
I did an ecotec swap, but my car is a 2002
there's a thread on here somewhere on swapping one into a 1998 sunfire or something to that effect. But the jist is you have to rewire the car from taillight to headlight.
but besides electrical, you have to get the engine, transmission, ecu, radiator, and upper motor mount as well as the front half of the exhaust (manifold all the way up to and including the catalytic converter). All jbodies have identical exhaust systems from the cat back (which is why all cat back systems work regardless of year)
I vaguely remember something about the gas tank / fuel pump setup being mentioned, but like I said I swapped an 02 car so I'm not too certain about earlier years.
