making my own on the cheap

well, i dont want to have to buy an expensive ass air intake kit so I'd just like to buy a filter and throw it on the end of my intake tubing(97 sunfire GT) i found a filter but the thing that im really worrying about is its size. the filter is about 5inches across and about six inches wide at the base (and prob 5 across at the top{conical shape})

does the size of the filter affect that much of the function of the air intake? it's a respectable size for the filter for a 4cy but i was just wondering about this.

The idea of a larger filter is a free air flow. Just about any size is OK, However, you will get a better gain, and sound if you replace your stock ribbed hose with either a plastic or metal pipe.

mine just goes from the throttlebody i build it out of the stock hose and put an really large exhaust pipe in it and the end, reactive super high flow filter. the total cost was under $40

Here's the one I made. It's some crappy intake off eBay that isn't even made for our cars even though eBay says it is, a 6" piece of 3" pipe I got from Autozone, and a 4" section of the stock intake I used as a coupler. All it cost me was $40 and an hour of my time.

It's something I noticed a distinct difference. I ran around with a cone filter on my stock tube for a ling time before I did the aluminum intake. It's not that there's a ton more power or anything like that but just the throttle response made me smile. It's so crisp and smooth now. And that nice sucking sound makes the little punk ricers on Saturday night turn their heads.

i just ground all of the restricting fins out of the stock box, replaced the stock air filter with a drop in k&n, removed the "bong", and smoothed all junctions and casting seams with a grinder. Hard to say how much difference but butt dyno says noticable.
