AEM vs UR Pulley
Saturday, April 01, 2006 8:54 PM
Ok I have been trying to figure this out. I read up on the pulley article in the Library. It sounds like a great idea to me to get a light weight one. But here is my question, does the UR Pulley replace all the pulleys while the AEM replaces only one pulley? In the article for the UR pulley it shows that he only pulled one pulley off that he replaced. But I have had people tell me that the UR pulley replaces all the pulleys. If not then why does the UR pulley cost $200 for just the pulley when the AEM is $85 for the pulleys and the belt? Is it because the UR pulley is one peice and the AEM pulley is a 2 peice kit? And from what I understand the UR pulley is lighter by like 2oz compared to the AEM pulley. Can anybody explain to me the difference between the 2? As you can tell I'm confused as heck.

The Unorthodox Pulley is just the Crank Pulley replacement
The AEM Pulley is an alternator pulley replacement

By the way, people probably say the AEM one come with 2 pulleys because it normally does but they only make an alternator pulley for the 2.4

Ok let me get this right.... The UR pulley is for the crank, and the AEM pulley is for the alternator? Hmmm... Totaly different pulleys then i see now. So in the library on replacing the pulley he is replacing the crank pulley and nothing else? Now I see a UR pulley called the Unorthodox Ultra S. What is this pulley for? And how hard is it to replace the crank and alternator pulley?

If you look in the library, the one article is talking about replacing a pulley with a Mantapart Pulley and the other one is talking about replacing it with an Unorthodox Pulley. Mantapart's I believe is stock sized and UR is underdriven.

Ok I went to the Mantrapart webpage and looking at what they offer in pulleys for the 2.4 I understand now about the pulleys I think. UR makes a crank pulley that is 14oz which is alot lighter than the stock crank pulley that is 4lb 7oz. AEM makes the alternator pulley that weighs about a pound. I'm not sure how much the stock alternator pulley weighs. Now there is also an A/C pulley that I have never heard anybody change before. So I'm guessing either people leave it alone or take out their A/C unit all together. So if I replace my Crank pulley with the UR pulley and my alternator pulley with the AEM pulley where would I get the belt at that would fit both new pulleys. Or does AEM make their alternator pulley oversized to match UR crank pulley so the stock belt will fit?

Ok, let me put this clearly...DON'T ORDER FROM MANTAPART! They have such terrible customer service and such a bad rep. Just don't do it...

Most people don't change the A/C pulley because it's already small and lightweight and it would yield you gains that you probably wouldn't even notice, that's how insignificant it would be.

I believe the whole thing with the UR & AEM pulley is that the UR pulley is underdriven (smaller than stock) and the AEM one is larger than stock, so this way you can run both of them and not have to change the belt from stock to another size.

You're welcome as well.

That's the thing, I don't think they make a Crank & Alternator Pulley set. From me looking up, all I've found is it saying "Pulley Kit - Alternator Pulley Only".

Look for yourself...

We carry both of these items. If you would use the AEM and the Unorthodox pulley you use the stock belt. If you just get the AEM and the stock crank, you use the belt that comes with the AEM Alt pulley. If you just use the Unorthodox and the stock alt pulley you use the belt part number that the instructions say to get with the unorthodox.

The AEM includes the belt, the unorthodox does not.

i think i might buy the alternator pulley off a friend of mine but he doesnt have the belt for it is there a part number for the belt and can i get the belt at like pepboys or autozone. and if i do decide to go with the unorthadox racing crank pulley later on i can just use the stock sized belt right?

As long as you can get the belt size, you can buy it anywhere.
