Black box?

do 2005 sunfires have a black box in the computer management that would tell average vehicle speed and top speeds.Just curious because my dad saw my tires and is threatening to check the "black box" to see how fast ive been going. i dont think the sunfire have anything of the sort but maybe im wrong.

Here's an idea....don't drive like an idiot. It's really great because

a) you'll have nothing to worry about
b) you'll save a lot of money with less tire wear and better gas mileage
c) you won't be forced to make yourself look dumb on JBO

Your dad is full of @!#$. J-bodies never came with a 'black box' and even if they did your dad can't check it

^ to summarize the above links the "black box" ONLY records the last few seconds before the airbag goes off. So your dad's got nothing

the kid is 16. He shouldn't be driving by itself in the first place if he burn the hell out of his tires.

when I got my Gtz, I went racing for a full year, did I don'tr know how many burn out and my tires are still good. So that mean is the kind of kid that will come back and ask about the limiter because he wants to get over 108mph. Trust me, been there, done that. At least the engine spun a rod bearing at 90mph.

If he's scared about his dad watching his speed that mean he's driving like a jerk.

Advice, SLOW DOWN and learn how to drive a car. A car won't stay on the road at high speed when you don't know how to drive. Especially a Cavalier.

Also, that should be in the newby forum, not in the performance forum.

agreed that the black box is in the car. it does kind of record while you are driving, but more or less it only cares about what was happening when the air bag is deployed, everything else is not recorded.

unless your dad has access to vehicle forensic equipment, he wouldnt be able to even get near reading anything there, he is just trying to scare you.

if your dad wanted to though, he could take the car to some one like me who installs tires for a living. i can pretty much tell if the tires are wearing from aggressive driving or not.

if the outside edge of one tire is worn, thats generally a suspention or alignment problem.

if the outside edsges of all tires are worn, thats aggressive driving. if the centeres are worn, it is generally due to high pressures, but if you have only had them one for 3 months and they are worn down the center, thats high pressures and a heavy foot.

do yourself a favour, be an idiot off the road where you can only kill yourself and the passangers in your car. ive been driving my cavalier for a while now, i know the limits of what it and my tires can do. i do not exceed that limit. find out what your limit is safely, take it to the track and do some auto cross or something, dont put it on 2 wheels in a school zone or something stupid like that.

Injection is nice but id rather be BLOWN!

The black box only records the vehicle speed just before the airbags deploy. But there are other ways to find out if a vehicle has recently been driven hard, or in excessive speeds.

I hope you own the sunfire, and it's not your parents car.

How does he have a license already?? What's the age where he lives? I was 16 when I got my learners, then 16.5 when I got my actualy junior license. Now I have my senior license because I'm over 18.

alright just becuase im 16 doesnt mean im new to cars. my dad saw the tires and tried to pull that black box bull @!#$ on me. but he does work at a dealership so he would have acess to it if there was such a thing. in ohio u get your permit when your 15.5 so u get your license when your sixteen.im not going to ask about the limiter cause ive been on here long enogugh to know i cant get that answer. And i hate when @!#$ act like they are ace drivers and theyve never driven fast. i have only been speeding in the day when its light out and in rural areas where i can see whats coming ahead. its not like im doing 80 in a school zone. but thanx for the info.
