I'm planning on building a custom exhaust system at some point in the future. Of course my ideas include me not sounding like a ricer.
I was thinking of mimicking the growl that the Nissan G35s and 350Zs have. Now I know they have V6 engines and much more power than me and that is one reason that contributes to the exhaust note.
But the other day I heard a Golf GTi pass by me and it sounded dead on with the exhaust tone of the G35. The only reason I was excited to hear it was because the GTi is a 4 banger as well, and I don't believe it was turbocharged. So I know it is possible to do. The only thing is, how.
I do plan on adding a supercharger as well, but for now, does anyone know of any starting points I can lead off with that could help replicate the tone, give me the performance, and not sound raspy, and loud like a can.
Well i dotn know what they sound liek to be honest but i just did my exhaust with a pacesetter header, magnaflow cat, 22" muffler/resonator, and dual bent up tip muffler with mandrel 2.25" tubing and its very deep for a 4 cyl..and not much rasp except when its cold....i have a sound clip but i dotn know where to host it..phil
GTi are turbocharged. still.... it can be done. lol
You might talk to Dave Dunsmoor (djdnz). He got his exhaust done a while ago, and I think it sounds really good. He had some videos posted, but they aren't up anymore, so you might ask if he still has them. It looks good, and I thought it sounded really good for our ecotec. I think it is pretty close to the sound you were wanting; supercharging would help even more.
if you want your car to sound like a 350Z then go buy a 350Z.
no 2 cars will sound alike

Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!
alot of that sound is due to them being a V6

If I had the money I would buy a GTO over the 350 anyway.

I know that most of the sound is due to the V6, its like saying I want to sound like a V8. All I'm saying is that I want to have an exhaust signature close to it, a GTi 4 banger in my town has done it, so it can be done.
GTis were 16V 4 bangers, VR6 V6 motors, and most recently turbo charged... It's possible you had a VR6 beside you or a turbo 2.0L...

Knowledge about everything and yet an expert of nothing!!
Jack of all trades.
Remember it is the engine making the tone, not the muffler.

im betting it was a VR6 , since it had a similar growl
yeah dude the VQ engines pwn in sound. I have never heard anyone mimc the sound with a 4banger. but I know what you mean they are so god damn sexy

I've been told my setup sound pretty similar to that of a 350Z. I have the Pacesetter header, stock converter(Damn California smog laws), a 30" Magnaflow Magnapack resonator, and a Borla Turbo XL muffler. Its as quiet as stock when I'm cruising and has a nice low growl to it when I floor it.
And I forgot to add that the tone of the 350Z does have a lot to do with it being a V6, like 97cavie24ls said.
Nissan spent millions making it sound like it does... not only is it a V6, but it's also the exact tuning on the exhaust system. So you'd need the same kind and layout of mufflers and chambers that the G35 has.... plus the displacement to drive it. No aftermarket muffler will sound like that... even on a G35, nothing will sound like it does stock, unless it's a replacement stock muffler.
Perhaps the VW had a stock G35 exhaust system on it?

see now as much as I agree with you something bothers me about your statement.
Ive seen plenty of movies with 350s and skylines(wink) where they have turbos after market exhuasts and such and they still have that broken sound that makes me loose it in my pants.
so if its the chambers why then does the engine still sound that way?
btw not to call you out baby gorrilla but I would rerally like to hear this exhuast of yours.
one last thing. as the turbo goes on I am going to have a very well known exhaust shop do my exahust and Im gonna see if they can get it like that. I will obvously have the cfm and if it takes a stock skyline (wink squared) muff then so be it.

i'll tell you right now that VW has a VR6. those engines sound amazing with an aftermarket exhaust, and sound
very similar to the VQ engines in the 350Z and G35.
so you say you want it to sound nice, but quiet, but get the most power also? try fitting the longest resonator you can after the cat, then try small resonators in any other short straight section you can fit them in, followed by a large oval shaped muffler at the end. obviously the more mufflers you have and the thicker they are, the more they'll quiet the sound. and get all mufflers and resonators straight thru with a perforated core for maximum flow.....and dont forget a high flow cat.

want it to sound like a g35? swap in a VQ motor.

If you can get a sound clip Gorilla, I'd like to hear it too.

why modify a slow cav to be fast???
why put a bodykit on a car to make it look different???
are you having a bad day you seem testy do you need a massage

Cam selection would play a big role here. The sooner the exaust valve opens (within reason), the more distinct the note/pulse will be. Don't think that you can get the sound you want from an exaust system.

GTI- 2.0 4 banger with a turbo, i own a volkswagen and go to the races alot, most people that drive gti's have 2.5 to 3 inch exhuast with a 22inch resantor and a Bolra or Euro Muffler. kI have 2.25 on my cavi, with a 22 inch resanator and a Can, its deep as hell. As well an intake and cams can give you a deeper note when you got it smashed to the floor!

Just cut off the exhaust before the cat. It makes a damn nice sound. Kinda makes it sound almost like a v8 and that is just at idling
