Ecotec Intake
Monday, April 17, 2006 4:06 PM
I've got a 2002 Z24 ecotec and i'm looking into an aftermarket intake. I've found 2 types of intake so far - shortram and cold air. I understand cold air is better but more expensive. This short-ram air intake form K&N claims to give 5.3hp gains. I've also seen cold-air intakes from AEM and other companies. Which is better? Are these kits really worth the money?

Another thing; I really don't want any hydrolock going on. Theres long winters up here in Canada and i'll probably be driving in slush 4 months a year. Is a cold air more suceptible to hydrolock than a short-ram?

it makes no difference either way, all intake give about the same small gain, which to be honest isn't even notiable, just changes the sound. But if your looking for a eco intake I have a like new RKSport one for sale

For the 250-300 that one pays for a new AEM, I'd say no, but I bought mine used for $130... it was well worth that. I wouldn't say it's not noticible... I would someone should be able to perceive a 4-8hp gain...

same all around for performance gain. idk if this is the same for the ecotec from the 2200 but i installed a cold air and i noticed a nicer get up and go. my bros friend had the warm air same engine same gen, same tranny and noticed the same thing. if there is a difference its not noticable.

Buy one from Ebay or build your own for about $40 to $60 from pieces at an auto parts store. Save your money for other parts that need to be name brand.

Just like everyone said, an intake is an intake, the gains are the same for both WAI and CAI. I bought the AEM CAI for my 03 Ecotec but now that i'm supercharged I can use the intake. I'd sell you that but my buddy already called dibs, lol.

I have that intake, but polished. I would say it is definetly worth the money. It added a good sound and more get up and go too. I got mine from TurboTech for like $185. It made for a very nice first mod. Heres a LINK. Heres a pic too (pretty dirty though)...

That's the exact one I was looking to buy...! The placement of the filter suggests it'd be difficult for water to get in there (hydrolock) so I may end up doing this mod. Since you can see the engine bay with your new intake, is there a good chance for water to get into the filter? is there some kind of shield to block water?

Oh, and did the intake ruin your bottom end power at all?

The only way water will get that high is if you take your car swiming.

Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.

and that's what the AEM bypass valve is for...

Now comming from someone that has installed the K&N Typhoon AND an AEM CAI on eco's... I'd personally suggest teh K&N just because of how much EASIER the install was.

As for gains, I really didn't knotice any differece between the 2, so it's really your own personal choice as for which kit to get.

My car does kind of "bog" when I really step on it, but it might be because its an automatic. Its not that noticable so whatever. I really like this thing and say buy it. I have never had problems with the water, but I wouldn't really know what to look for if I did. There is no shield; it is just in there. This one is probly better than a CAI though.

I have a Weapon-R Dragon installed on my 03 fire (eco). It works great...The intake paired up with the dual exhaust (still factory) gives it a very nice deep "growl", espicially when i floor it. The installation was a breeze, very simple, and pretty good instructions (plus the filter looks really cool if you get the black/chrome like i did). I got mine for about $130. The only problem that i have with it, is that it fits really tight under the hood, it doesnt rub, but since the intake itself is kinda big it just fits really tight.

If you thought the AEM install is too hard then you're obviously not a car guy

I think he ment, its just more things to take off, and more parts to mess around with. Its definatly not that hard, granted ive never installed one. But a while ago, AEM had a link to thier site on an install that somebody did. It just involves taking off the drivers side fender and the pastic that goes around it. That is all ... personally, I am happy with my wai .... it does the job just fine.

Now ... as far as the 5.3HP gain ... that is probaly with an aftermarket exhaust system ... header, cat back exhaust and a high flow cat.

So, I'm actually looking at a couple different intakes right now for my '03 sunfire. The weapon r dragon or the rksport. Which would most people recommend based on install etc.? I like the looks of the Weapon r, but if it's going to be such a tight fit maybe the rksport would be better?

No edit yet, but forgot to include the K&N Typhoon as another of the options I was looking at.

K&N Typhoon = good fitment, super easy install, good looks, good performance gain, helps ecotec sound a little meaner

buy junk ebay cold air, then use a k&n or other brand of filter, this would save alot of money and do the same thing as like an aem cold air intake, I have am aem only cause i got if from a friend for 75 bucks, but had i not got it i would have bought ebay cheap one, the filter is all that really ,matters, the cheap ebay filters either flow alot of air and a lot of dirt, or filter good and dont let air, its really all in the filter, trust a name like k&n, dont mess up your motor to save a few bucks

I have the weapon-R dragon on my 04 cavalier. I dented the hood shutting it one day because it sits so high on the throttle-body. The sunfire might have slightly more clearance though.

I did notice a -slight- increase in horsepower. It also has a pleasant whooosh when I rev the engine.

Weapon-R does make a dif intake. Secret Weapon or something. It might be shorter on the throttle-body.

There doesn't seem like much of a difference between everyone's intake. The important thing is the filter. There's more air coming in and that means there are more particulates trying to get in aswell. Make sure that you get a quality air filter on the end of the tube. K&N might seem expensive, but with the recharger kit thingy you don't have to buy a new one.
