has anyone (for the ecotec) picked up some adj cam gears and advanced the intake and retard the exhaust? is there any difference? bc in theory advancing the intake timing would help out with some low end torque while retarding the exhaust timing would help with top end hp.

lol...I was just gonna make a post about this
I wanted to revisit the topic, since when I last mentioned it, my timing was all screwed up from my head/cam swap (though I didn't know it at the time) and my car was running like sh!t with the gears on.
since the timing has been fixed, I've had the gears set at stock settings and I wanted to see if anyone has any feedback...recently that is...
I put the gears on cuz I figured why not while I was doing all that other stuff - I knew I'd be getting the supercharger when it came out so I figured theay might help with the aftermarket cams and all...I haven't been able to get results due to my timing issues and other prolems and just losing interest and time from all the frustration surrounding my head swap (had many problems occur after that)...anyway, I never even definitively got an answer as to which direction was advance and retard (though I'm pretty sure I had it figured out)...anyone got any feedback on that?? (see my pathetic pic below)
Sorry for the pic quality but if you were looking at my engine from the passenger side fender and saw this: would you say that my intake timing was advanced approximately 5 degrees and my exhaust was retarded approximately 5 degrees? or do I have it mixed up?
I probably won't dyno different timing settings in N/A form...once I run the car N/A at the track to see what it can do (I might play with the timing a little if I can get this confirmed), I am going to boost it (and maybe play with the timing then) when the GM charger is confirmed on '02 s with Delphi injectors
Anyone have any ideas??

if this is the explanation for the product:
"This adjustable camshaft gear set allows valve timing to be advanced or retarded up to 16 degrees of crankshaft rotation. Set includes both intake and exhaust camshaft gears."
and there are two rotations of the camshaft for every one rotation of the crank; and there are no numbers or anything but slash marks on the gears (17 total: 1 in the center and 8 on each side)...I'm assuming each slash is one degree of crankshaft rotation - right??
also, the direction of the timing assembly rotation is clockwise...I'm confused now as to which direction on the cam gear dial is advance and which is retard...the yellow line on the center disk (which would be connected to the cam itself) in the pic above was drawn on by me, the actual mark is on the outer edge surface (perpendicular to the face of the center disk)...
anyone???

anybody know for certain??

i think that adjusting the cam gear toward the direction the crank rotates is advanced and adjusting the gears the counterclockwise is retarded. not sure on this though.
15.4 @ 89mph
this isn't a difficlut concept. the chain spins clockwise.... if you adjust the teeth on the gear clockwise it farther ahead... meaning its advanced.... if you adjust counterclockwise your moving it back which would be retarding it.
in this pic the exhaust gear is advanced and the intake gear is retarded (assuming your locking at ot form the passenger side fender)
i cant say which way to go either but think of it this way, advancing is makin the valve open sooner and retarding is opening later. so look at which way everything turns and move the gear according to which would make the valve open sooner or later depending on what you are wanting.
hope that makes sence

hahaha sorry I guess it is a dificult concept.... I explain it backwards
ok trying to think how to explain this going on liek 2 hours of sleep last night hahaha.
the way I explain is going off solid gears....
if you adjust the teeth forward it retards the cam... now when you adjust it your not actually adjusting the teeth forward in terms of where the teeth are in the chain... your adjusting them forward in comparison to the cam lacation..... in other words the gear stays stationary and the cam it self moves backwards.
if you move the entire gear forward your advancing everything.... if the gear stays still like it should you move the cam itself clockwise to advance it. in the pic above you have it correct with the markings.
The cam gears stay still, you move the cam itself, clockwise cam roataion is advanced, counterclockwise cam rotation is retarded.
I'm half asleep so I hope that makes sence this time hahahah
that's what I thought...with so many backward things going on I got a little unsure...
Thanks,
Matt
