whats the main difference. thought this deserved its own thread. can the newer ones be transplanted in place of an old one? does the tranny still bolt up?

there is minor differences , but the motors will swap out fairly easy
the only big difference is the knock sensor hole in the block , to use the 99-02 in a 96-98 you gotta drill and tap the hole bigger , and heli coil for the other direction
Tranny bolts up fine, main difference externally are the injectors and the knock sensor, along with the EGR. I don't know if you can convert a non-egr LD9 to an EGR LD9 though, but you could do an EGR delete or swap in the 2k+ wiring (which you wouldn't have to change the injectors or knock sensor for).

yup, non-egr can be converted to egr just by adding the older stuff to the engine, the egr passage is still in the head for the 99-02's

Also, in '96 the oil pan has an oil level sensor but the '98 motor i swapped in didn't.
lil bit of a jack but it's still related.
do i hav to remove the engine to tap that knock sensor? that would really suck cause right after i boost my car im going to take care of that damn egr with a 99 swap or anything else that i can find that really works (which seems like nothing)
