Secret cams hurt auto's?
Wednesday, April 26, 2006 12:00 PM
I've got plans to get the secret cams in in a couple weeks and I've been told that they actually seem to hurt the automatic trannies more than give it a boost. I don't know how they justify it.. I've done a search on here and found one comment about the powerband being put out of the automatic's usable range.. but I imagine the rev limiter is the same on both the auto's and manuals so I don't quite get that argument..

Looking for some insight and what not.. the only problem I can see myself running into is that I already have the HO intake manifold on so with the cams I'll really be hurting with a stock exhaust.. but other than that...?

Also.. if the weather complies.. I'll have two different track runs.. one with my current mods and then I'll go again after the cams go in.. I know weather and conditions play a role in times, but it'll be interesting to see if I can get it done.

Thanks in advance for any input about the cams hurting the auto's.

The duration on the intake is the same( might be 2 degrees more), which is the important one, so your powerband should not change. These cams are very mild. I would not hesitate to use them in an auto trans car.
The rev limiter is the same. I have both an auto, and a 5spd car.

Just had the cams put in not long ago and noticed a considerable improvement already. I haven't really had the chance to get in on it hard but do notice the revs seem better and it picks up better above the 3000rpm range. Will be going to the track and try a run in a couple weeks and compare it to the run about a month or two ago.

Good to hear, it didn't make much sense to me but thought I'd check to see if anyone knew of it.

I'm auto with the secret stage "1.5" cams.
Basically both LO 200 @ .375 lift cams on the intake and exhaust side.

But no problems here.

I too am on factory exhaust so I'm loosing on the total feel.
But still the car as a little more pick up 3K and above.

HO manifold going on the weekend I hope.
Depends on how the 'boss' feels.

I have a 99 Z auto with the secret cam swap, the only prob I have with them is it does move your powerband up slightly and hurts your 60' just a little, just doesn't have the torque at really low end it did before I haven't got to run in the 1/4 with em yet but my 1/8th mile times stayed the same, my 60' went down abou.2 but I only got to make one pass so far as well, but I made up the .2 by the 1/8th and was running about 2 mph better trap speed so it should help tremedously in the 1/4 headed to the track next month so we will see what happens. it made the car soo much faster on top end. I have no complaints at all very good mod for the price

Secrets are perfect for the auto... its the larger cams like the LZM/JBP Stage IIs that give auto issues. A local BCJ guy has the Stage II cams and he slowed down by like 6-7 tenths in the 1/4 mile making an extra 22whp!
