I just got ahold of a sunbird 3.1l that im makeing into a stock car....now other then choping off like almost half the cars wieght im also thinking i should do a few free or cheap mods to boost the pefomance...now im new to the 3.1s but i know other cars have some free mods i was wondering if these engines do?? Anyone have and tricks or tips how to squezze just alittle more from this sixer??

Wait a minute. Stock car? As in dirt track racing? Okay, one of the guys in my office was talking about this and I thought he was blowing smoke. They actually race FWD cars NASCAR style? Now I know why he wanted a 4cylinder beater. He said he wanted something he could yank out everything including the glass to go racing and now it makes sense.
Had to get that off my chest. Since it's only for racing, I'd say remove any emissions stuff you can think of, including the cat. Yank the power steering and A/C and get a shorter belt for the serpantine. Do the air filter, but use a cone filter and yank out the airbox.

not sure how much emissions stuff i want to remove...doesnt it sometimes make the car run rough with some stuff off cause it messes up the computer or something???
I cant remove the power sterring,,,without it i wouldnt beable to turn the car...my arms get sore enoght like this...if i removed it youd need to get a manual set up power steering withou power is alot harder to turn then a actual manual sterring.
And yes I am gutting the car and driving it nascar style.....no dirt here tho its on a paved oval.....and its an endro race of 100 laps its really fun theres like 50 cars sometimes and only like 10 or so actually finish... its really fun to watch and its very easy to enter...just bust out the windows rig up somewat of a roll bar and a plate on the drivers door and your good too go...some like me get more serious and gut the car and lower them and stuff...but all the cars are fwd...it also brings in alot of ppl to watch as theres lots of action and for almost no money you can put any old junker in it you want. I raced in it last yr and came in 3rd and the other times the car broke and i didnt get to finish and that was with a 2.2 shadow imagin a 3.1l now.
jbody peformance has a power steering delete kit that actually includes a manual rack, might be worth checking out.
other than that, you can do the throttlebody coolant bypass, since cold starting will not be an issue for an oval track car.... other than that the standard prep stuff... good alignment, regular bleeding of the clutch and brakes, etc... all of that helps you out somewhat... check out v6z24.com there's a lot more info over there as far as the 3.1 goes. I don't suppose the rules allow for engine swaps? 3400 would be a nice boost lol.

They probably dont allow for a swap. But it's worth looking into how far you can push that rule. If you're allowed to change head's and intakes, then you can just take the 3400 (or 00+ 3100) heads and intakes and put on the block.
