Yesterday I installed a new Vibrant intake on my 2000 Cavalier (2.2L 2200 engine). I didn't have much of a problem with the "heavy lifting" parts (removing the battery, old intake box, hooking up intake, etc.) but there were a couple of things that I would like to get some feedback on from someone who has installed one of these:
1. The IAT sensor. The hole on the grommet is far too small to fit the entire IAT sensor all the way in. I tried to bore it out a bit with the dremel but after about 30 minutes it barely made a difference. What I ended up doing was putting the grommet in, and pushing the IAT sensor in as far as it would go. The tip of the IAT sensor is "inside" the grommet and not poking into the tube. Is this normal, or should I try to find a different grommet with a larger hole?
2. The support. I wasn't sure where to mount the support, or how to actually make it support the filter / intake. For now I have it mounted on one of the body panel screws near the fuse box. The end of it sits just inside the filter, holding up the rim. I know this probably isn't the best location, as it is supporting the filter rather than the end of the intake, but I ran out of time and it's better than nothing. Is there a preferred location for this support to go to?
3. The filter. Is the Vibrant filter any good or should I replace it with K&N?
This is the first time I've put one of these intakes on so please excuse my n00b factor. I did search though and didn't find anything regarding these topics.
Have you got one of those all metal rotary cutting bits for the dremel. The kind that looks like a very course file all the way around, cuz they'll eat through about anything. Don't know about the filter.
i've got the same model year, engine, and intake and i had all the same issues as you PYRO. here's what i did:
1. the hole in my intake was also too small. i ended up grinding it open with a drill bit, but a dremel should also work. you just have to make the hole bigger and use the grommet they give you....although the grommet itself is a bit small. you might try getting one with a larger inside diameter at a hardware store.
2. maybe yours is a different version but mine didn't have a support bracket. the 'rim' of the filter is just resting where the factory intake box used to be - never had a problem leaving it like that.
3. i went for a while with the filter they gave me, until the rubber on it became brittle and cracked. i had wanted to change it for a long time and eventually i just got a K&N cone filter to replace it.
p.s. - check to make sure that the highest point on the intake tubing doesn't rub on the underside of your hood - mine did a little at first.
Thanks for the feedback. I used to have a high-speed cutter for the dremel but it got worn down (trying to grind wax off of a ceramic surface, ceramic destroyed the blade parts). May go to a hardware store and pick up a new one since they're only ~$5 and a good piece to have. None of the drill bits I have are as large or larger than the hole in the grommet.
The installation instructions don't provide a lot of details about where to put the bracket. It has to be bent to shape, and is supposed to mount to a screw hole from the stock intake, though the stock intake didn't have any screws! It seems a bit too short, and if I can't get it to work reasonably well I may just buy a new strip of sheet metal from the hardware store and drill a screw hole in that. Mounting it to one of the strut tower bolts would probably work since they're closer though I almost broke the handle off my socket driver trying to get it off, and I don't have a small enough socket for my 3/8" ratchet.
