How to know what mixture is good for me????
Wednesday, May 10, 2006 7:26 PM
ok, i have the new engine in since about 2weeks.
here is what i have if that could help:
-both HO cams
-HO intake mani with the 56mm tb
-086 head
-stainless steel valves
-10.5:1 c/r with 086
-2.3l oi pump conversion

i just hooked a wideband to get start at tuning even tho i dont know much about it. still.. i wanna learn.
As soon as i receive my gauge for the fuel pressure i'll hook my adjustable regulator.
now how do i know what mixture air/fuel is good for my application?
should i get a SAFC2 to tune this? will a msd dis2 be usefull?
also should i get the aux box from innovate so i could log data like rpm, tps position along with the a/f?
any help would be appreciate here.
thanx

Being N/A...... I would say 13.7-14.7 would be a good target A/F (from a tad rich, to stoich)...... Running leaner will produce more HP, but at the risk of running lean (but since its N/A, you have a bit more room to play).

I dont see a need for the SAFC...... the AFPR should be more then enough to control the A/F ratio, I also dont think you will need the MSD DIS2..... unless you want to swap to external coils, and want that extra spark control.

A data logger would be a good idea. Wish I had one for the drag car.

so 13.7 at wot would be good right? because now at wot i see as low as 12 when i'm near the 7200rpm. but at idle i'm at 14.7, so if i play with the afpr to get leaner at wot, wont i be too lean at idle? and how to know what is best for me, i mean youre saying 13.7, but how did you get that number?
i just wanna learn here...
thanx alot!

you want to run on the slightly rich side for max power

only a dyno will tell you where you can make your max power at and what afr you need

pretty much we can guess all day long and maybe be right , but high 12's to low 13's is still fairly safe

but get to a dyno and get it tuned

12.5 to 13:1 is typically best for making power at WOT. 12:1 is just a tad too rich. 14 to 14.7 is good for crusing and warm idle, but too lean for WOT. Be conservitive with you ignition timing and creep up on the advance. You best bet would be to get the HP Tuners and go to a dyno shop and have them tune it.

^^^i would, but the thing is that i swapped to OBD1 and got the mantapart HO chip to get the rev limitier at 7200. HPT is for OBD2....

ok, so if i set the afpr to be leaner at WOT, wont i be too lean at idle?
thanx

You can use the afpr to tune WOT, but at idle and normal driving the ecu uses the factory O2 sensor to add or remove fuel in order to keep it at the 14.7 a/f ratio it wants to see under those conditions, regardless of what your fuel pressure is at (withing reason).

15.3 @ 89.97mph, 14's on the way?

Good, thats what i wanted to know.
thanx!

ok if i get this right, as go higher in the rpm, the mixture get richer and richer right?
so 12.5 to 13.1 at 7200rpm would be good?

No, you want that at Wide Open Throttle. You can be at almost any RPM and be at WOT. The PCM (OBD I or II) works off a fixed fuel map (parameters set with RPM,TPS, IAT and MAP) at WOT. Most anything below WOT, the PCM will adjust the A/F ratio using the O2 sensor (once again with the help of the RPM, TPS, IAT and MAP).

oh... i see! so even at 2k rpm at wot i should see 12.5 13.1!!!! and the same at 7.2k rmp!
its kinda hard to see the wideband while driving, it fluctuate so much.... thats why i wanna data log
thanx

So what is the power like with the 086 head and the HO cams witht he compression so high? And where did you get your information to do the 086 head swap?
