Exhaust Question - 2 Resonators
Wednesday, May 24, 2006 10:31 AM
I finally got an appointment with the exhaust shop to do my exhaust setup. I have everything all picked out, but they just called me about the resonator today and said that the longest resonator they can get that is 2.5" inlet and outlet is 18" long. Could I just put two of them in a row, or would that not work or sound well? I found the 40" on Summit, but the problem with that is I can't put the 2nd O2 sensor in the stock location b/c the resonator would take up that entire space. Let me know what you guys think.

There's no problem with using two of them.

Ok, I wanted to make sure. I know I have heard from some people that if you put two resonators in a row, it won't dull the sound like it will with one big one. Anyone else have an opinion?

Thanks Evil for the reply.

If you go to http://www.dynomax.com/ and look up their e-catalog, under the muffler section to thrush, you ll find their Mganum Glasspack series. The one listed, comes in Stainless Steel, only one 2 1/2" in/out, 25" overall length, 20" body as part # 24240. This one has a 2 1/2" core and a 3 1/2" body diameter. They also have two models with the 2 1/2" in/out, both have 2 1/2" core and a 4" body diameter. The first is part # 24214, which has an over all length of 28" and a body length of 23". the second is part # 24213 and has an o.a.l. of 45" and body length of 40". The second, which you mentioned above, will be just too long. I have a 2.2L (exhaust exits from in front of the motor) and I used the 35", 2 1/4" in/out on mine and it just barely fit with a 13" cat w/ O2 sensor and cutting 8" from the head pipe. Your exhaust, exiting from behind the motor leaves you with less room to work with, so either the 25"o.a.l. s.s. or the 28" o.a.l. painted would be your best bet.

Here's the links to Summit's listing for the glasspacks: WLK-24214, WLK-24213. These will ship today. They didn't list the #24240, but I bet they can get it in less than 2 weeks, typically.

Wow, thanks MadJack. That was VERY helpful. Do you have any opinion as to what length I should go with? I want it to be as quiet as possible. I'm getting rid of the cat and will have the O2 sensor in a test pipe near the stock location with the spark plug anti-fouler trick. I'm also going with a Johnson muffler which the exhaust guy said is pretty quiet. I just don't know what length to get.....

The longer the quieter it should be. I'm not familiar with the Johnson muffler. With the S/C 2 1/2" is a good size. IDK what design the Johnson uses, but performance wise I say go with a straight through design. I've had good results with the Dynomax UltaFlos (SS & welded). See my profile for what I've got, my intake is louder than my exhaust (for now anyways )!

You might want to try the 25" long UltraFlo with the 28" glasspack for a fairly quiet, but good flowing exhaust. This may or may not work for your tastes. Remember though, I've got an N/A 2.2L as opposed to your S/C 2.4, so the sound will differ.See the Dynomax link above for more on their UltraFlo mufflers.

Besides, everyone will hear the S/C whine, when you get on it, so your secret would get out anyways!

Well, I just got off the phone with the exhaust shop and they already ordered (2) 17" glasspacks. He said that those were the only size glasspacks that he could find where the inside diameter stayed the same all the way through. He said most of them go down to 2 1/4 or 2" on the inside even though the inlet and outlet's are 2 1/2". Anyway, he said he was kind of worried whether or not he could fit 2 of them in there along with a place to put the O2 sensor. I was going to order the one MadJack suggested from Summit, but I had to call to check the diameter of the pipe all the way through, and I couldn't get ahold of anyone that knew for sure. And the guy at the exhaust shop had to have his order in this morning to get everything there on time.

Soo....Anyone have any idea if there will be room for 2 17" glasspacks coming off a RKSport 4-1 header?

It will be very close. I think my bother has two 14 inch Resonators. Not exactly sure on the length though, sorry. His car is pretty quiet now.

Since you're ditching the cat, you should have room. You're pretty much eliminating the majority of the exhaust pipe, so you're going to have one very large muffler in a sense, but hey, if it works, let me know. I'm wanting to quiet my car down a bit too.

Luke, I got your e-mail.

Both the Glasspacks I listed above maintain the same i.d. of 2 1/2". Since you wont be running a cat, that will leave you with extra room for a longer glasspack. Your best bet would be to measure how much room you would have from where the down pipe from the header levels out and is in line with the exhaust going to the back of the car, where it makes its turn to go over the rear axle. however long that length is is how long of a glasspack will fit. Just get the longest one you can fit for the quietest exhaust.

BTW you can have the Cat flange, on the header down pipe, cut off for more room.
