Tach install on Eco
Thursday, March 16, 2006 9:47 AM
OK so i am in the process of hooking up my tach w/ tach adapter. I am going to try to use the white wire that is going into the ignition module.

I have searched and some say its pink some say white. Now my question: Do I just clip the wire in half and hook it to the tach adapter or do I remove some of the rubber part around the wire and use the exposed part? thanks in advance!

if you use one or the other your only going to get half the signal I belive because of the two colis but the white or the pink will work.

ok well I cut the white wire in half and attached one side to the solid red wire on the tach adapter, and the other side to the red w/ green stripe wire. I started the car and it runs really rough now? wtf? I dont have the tach hooked up yet? help please!

I dont have much experience with this but I can tell you that only one of the wires should be hooked to the wire you cut.

The wire you cut has to have both sides touching each other. With it cut and connected to different wires you have cut a signal off to your cars computer that is why it is running badly.

If the adapted has only two wires on is the input from the car the other is the output to the tach.

The input wire gets connected in a three way with the two ends of the wire you cut.

The output wire gets connected to your tach singnal wire.

Soldered connections would be best becuase you dont want to loose the signal to resistance in the connection.

Ok here is whats wrong, and how to fix it.

Im assuming your running the MSD #8913 Tach adapter, you should be if your not.

nOw put that wire you cut back together with solder, shrink wrap, and some black tape for extra protection.

And do the same process oyu used only hook it to the pink wire coming off the top of your engines IDI cover. the clip is on the right (drivers side) of the top of the engine.

You will fine if you hook it up this way.....

Pink- Red then Red/Green- Pink
Black - a suitable ground
Grey - Tach

THat is exactly how its supposed to be hooked up per MSD's ignition wisdom.
And it works on my car which is an ECO.

You had the process right, just chose wrong wire.

OK thanks a lot for the replies guys! I am using the autometer tach adapter btw..

I have everything wired up using the connectors that came w/ the tach and adapter.

I havent tried to start it up again yet but if it dosent read right I'm going to try the pink wire. I am also using a switch for the backlight on the tach in case anyone cares lol

I will post which wire works lol

Yeha the pink wire is the key, thats the one you need to tap. And i guess it dont matter which adapter you use, MSD, Autometer, etc; As long as it has the same wiring, Red, Red/Green, Gray, Black.

yea the autometer tach adapter has the same colored wires as the MSD.

I tried to hook it up w/ the white wire and I got no RPM reading...

I guess ill try it w/ the pink wire tonite and I'll post if that works or not.

Oh and I have another question: where can I hook up the white wire from the tach (for the backlight)??? I tried a few fuses on the fuseblock inside the car and they have all made the light on the tach stay on. I figured it was the one marked "clstr" for cluster but the light stayed on regardless.

Thanks again everyone for the replies, I would prolly be lost w/ out them!
