ok, so i bought the engine (2000 LD9) from a guy for $35 off ebay. he said it was a spun rod bearing, and indeed it had that, what he forgot to mention was the massive chunk outta the number two piston and the broken ring as well as a seized ring. the head is the only thing I am worried about though because its the only part im keeping that seems to be damaged. I am guessing it is from the debris in the cylinder but it actually has what looks like divets, high and low spots.
what is the most i could shave the head if i stuck a thick head gasket in there?
pics will be up soon once my camera phone stops being a homo.
wow, you paid about the same for a motor as you would to fill you gas tank
+/-$35 just filled it from practically fumes today.
but anyways, take it to a local shop and see what they have to say
either you got really lucky or you got a hunk of scap metal. even with the piston shot you got a deal assuming the block can be rebiult. put it this way, the least I ever paid for a motor was $350 and I baught it knowing it was a basket case in need of a complete overhaul

when you beat someone in a cavalier they pull over and check under thier hoods
How much you can shave the head depends on how thick the head gasket is? What did you have in mind?

better a delay than a disaster.
It might be salvagable, have a shop check it.
Problem is it's an OHC motor and there's not alot of leway for surfaceing the head (or block for that matter). removing too much material leaves too much slack in the timing chain/belt.
The block could be good, you can have the bearing surface redone, as well as the cylinder walls resleved. All in all, i think what your looking at with that head is simply port & polish to clean it up.
If im understanding you correctly, the number 2 had debris in it from a dead piston, the debris stuck to the head kind of like welding splater. If the piston wall got damaged from a heated ring, that will have to be bored or replaced. However, for $35, thats cheaper than core, so all your really going to be in to the motor is labor plus a nice set of forged pistons/custom rods and port & polish.
Make sure the head isnt cracked, you can shave a few mm's off the head, but be careful that ohc motor has issues when shaven and cam timing.
I would rebuild it, do the machine work yourself and save a few bucks, get it haulin strong and go back on ebay with it for sale. Give the complete history, a buyer will love that the engine went from trash to treasure by someone who loves the J.
heads can be fixed, cylinders can be sleeved, cranks can be turned, I fail to see the problem. You'd be surprised what a machine shop can fix these days !

well this engine was bought as my build up motor. as far as i know, the cylinder walls are fine, they will be bored 0.020" over for the wiseco pistons im putting in. i have clevitte main AND rod bearings already to go in. and the will sit in some eagle rods. im planning on doing the crank work also(knife edge, cross drill, maybe lighten? and then balance).
the head is the only thing other than the piston that has visible wear. i didnt get a chance to get pics of the head today but here is the piston.
nasty eh? oh and just for the record, there are no sleeves on the 2.4 LD9 haha. if im wrong with that im gonna feel like a tool.
kinda useless to buy rod and crank bearings before you know what the crank is gonna clean up at
unless you got a spare good crank
I do indeed, but its kinda in my car right now. the crank should be fine though should it not?
not if the bearing spun , it usually destroys the surface , which requires turning if saveable , and requires over size bearings
^ ^ ^ Is right. You need to see what the machine shop turns the journals down to so you can order the correct bearings.

ill probably just get JBP to do the work for me, and then have to pay the core fee. ill give them mine and they can inspect it, if its bad, then whatever, not a huge loss.
