i have a 99 cav with a2200 what needs to by done to put a 3.1 in
*uses Jedi mind trick to dump the idea of putting a 3.1 litre* you want to put in a 3400 DOHC... you don't want a 3.1 litre.
*uses common sense to acknowledge the fact the 3.4L DOHC is too big physically to fit in a 3rd gen bay, and that even if made to fit, it would be a royal PITA to work on...you don't want a DOHC V6 in there...go 3800

first decide what you want from the car..
HP, tack times, novelty..
then plan your course of action. personally if your power goals are 300+ hp i'd go eco for parts avail and fitment. the novelty of having a V6 in a 3rd gen is sweet! check out raven's beast. but realize there is a whole lot of sweat and $$$$ in that car. performance per dollar (above 300 HP) will be owned soley by the eco (and quad4's to a degree) on our cars

Sven you totally quarterloafed your computer..

Ever seen DoubleZed's vert?
Actually, the DOHC would be easier to change plugs on, since they won't be down between the fat 90 degree block and the firewall, as on the 3800.
Also, to answer the original question, one might try searching in the 3rd gen forum, where there is lots of into.
Someone actually did it? holy crapola. Did he modify the bay at all?
When I think of problems, I think of head gaskets

Wow, everyone always focuses so much on the exterior of that car, that I've never heard anyone mention the engine swap...wow.

thats cooler than cool ^ - thats ice cold.
p.s. except for the paint, wouldn't be my first choice.

I'll show him this thread when I get to the shop this morning, I'll bet he will like that comment.
Back to the original post, don't put a 3.1 in there it's just not worth it. If you do want to go with a V6 then the 3.4l DOHC, 3400 OHV and the 3800 (both supercharged and non) will all fit with some work (custom subframe and mounts). I would even bet that the new 3.5L DOHC would fit as well

Anyway if you want to get a V6 in your 3rd gen then it is going to be a lot of work, money and time. Just make sure you know the road your heading down before you start.
P.S. Someone said something about changing spark plugs on the 3800. Actually there is all kinds of room to change them. I can change all 6 in about 5 min time. The hardest to get at are actually the front ones because the cooling fan and rad are pretty close to the front manifold.

I agree with Raven a V6 3400 or 3800 has plenty of room to get to the back plugs . On my 3400 the front plugs are just as easy to reach if not easier than the 2.2/2200 engines .
If you have'nt seen how much room there is with the V6 then don't try making assumptions about how hard or easy it is .
Headaches ...... Yes you will get them while installing a V6 into your J-body .
Money ...... You are going to spend it once you start the installation .
Determination ...... You will also need that , At some point you will reach the point of no return . That is around the time you get the engine in and see that you have re-engineered your car to take the V6 .
3800 ..... Raven can tell you that there is a lot of fabrication and mounts to be made . But look at the power you gain with still more room to expand on .
3400 ..... I can tell you that beside making the lower engine mount , the upper mount is off the shelf GM parts . Still you get good power with room to expand . I have spent some money on my car , but I am installing what I know I will need later on when the second engine goes in .
Unique .... Very unique when people think you have a 2.2/2200 just to find out it is'nt the run of the mill J-Body .

someone told me the tiburon will bolt right up in the J bay. he didn't say whether it was the 2.0 or the 2.7. my 2.2 is about to go. if the 2.7 will fit, i might go with that. doesn't produce the power of a 3800, but it'll give me enough to make me happy. 230-240...something like that. i'm gonna check more into it. not sure if he knows what he's talking about.
alright, 230-240 is bull, unless he meant after beefing it up. the 2.7 only has like 175hp. phiffff. if that's the case, i'm going for the 3800.
