2.4L msd ignition coil install
Wednesday, September 28, 2005 8:59 AM
hey im thinking about getting an msd ignition coil pack for my car.

the other day i was changing plugs and noticed that there is no actual plug wires going to a coil pack and that its all built into the idi cover.

my question is how do i go about installing an msd system then?

Whats up people?

you have to loose the IDI cover and wire it like the 2.2 with external coil packs. I'm pretty sure there is something else you have to change, but I can't remember what it is. Event has a diagram for the 2.2 coil wiring, to get you started probably in the performance FAQ.

^^^^ would i really have to loose the idi cover ? ? ?
couldnt i just strip out the old coilpack and run the wires out the side
where the old harness was?

Yes, you can keep the IDI cover. You would just have to run your wires underneath it and out the side, and it would only be there for looks afterward.

Or you could keep your stock ICM bolted to the cover, keeping it as a large heat sink.......

we've got this done on our W41 motor, works great.

(stock 2.2 ohv coils, MSD DIS II HO unit)

we'll upgrade to MSD 2.2 coils soon.

kool thanks for the info

one last check on this project for the items required (grabbed from the faq):
- MSD DIS II (for all J's)
- MSD GM 2 Tower Coil Pack= Part# 8224 (need 2 of them)
- MSD GM Dual Tower Interface Module= Part# 8870 (need 2 of them)
- wires
- just got new plugs so it should be good right

anything else i might take into consideration or need?
