not to harp on you..but right from the sticky, lots of links that are dead now but the important info is still intact

CHIPS : “I wanna chip my car!” so do the rest of us, but you now can take 1 minute out of your day to thank OBD2 computer that control our cars. On third gens from 96 and up, its OBD2, and OBD2 is as of now, unable to be chipped. There is such thing as a reflash programming, but VERY FEW places can do it. RSMracing.com Mantapart.com stated on their websites that they do it. But its expensive. And to what degree they do things, well I am not sure, if you wanna know, then call them or email them. Go straight to the source so you KNOW from the COMPANY DIRECTLY. 95 and earlier cars that had OBD1 computers however can be chipped. However chips companies that are decent are rare.

When he referred to ebay "overwhelming number" and chips, the first thing that comes to mind is venom chips and ebay resistor mods. Although hpt and ms are great for self and dyno assisted tuning, I don't think he had that in mind and spending $400 upwards. I didn't know hpt was selling a performance chip, I assumed it was the hardware/software to recalibrate your pcm

I purchased one for a 1989 cavalier a couple years ago and it seemed to help some. When I got rid of the car I busted the thing open to find out that I paid $40 for a resistor. I now know how to make my own, which are easier to hide, and cost about 99 cents.

Actualy you can buy a pack of 5 of the resisters from Radio Shack for .99 cents. Then just sel them to all your friends for $20.00 each and think of the profit you could make!

Funny, that is what I was thinking!

Does the resistor mod acutally work?

I was thinking about installing it on a toggle switch so that I could turn it on or off to test.

What exactly does it do?

^ ^ ^ Uh, NO. All it does is trick the computer into thinking the incoming air is colrder then it really is so it adds more fuel. The problem lies in the fact that no mpre air can enter the engine so all it does is make you run richer wasting fuel.

I am using it in a racing application, full throttle. Fuel ecconomy is not a concern. That said, does more fuel help me?

More fuel with no more air just =running rich and fowling spark plugs. Please believe me when I tell you they don't do anything. If they did I'd certainly tell you.

My friend bought it for me for my birthday a year ago and put it on there (before I even knew what it was or where it was from) and I found out recently that it's crap. So I took it off and my car felt slower, put it back on it was that, that actually made a difference. I didn't believe it at first, but I guess it did really help.

Its faster because you think its faster. Run it at the track and get some actual readings besides a butt dyno and you'll see that we're all right and that it doesn't do anything.

like Jackalope said, its faster because you think it is. get some real results. track tested, dyno tested. then see what a waste it is

they should outlaw the butt dyno for claimed results

I also saw a "mod" that connects to the o2 sensor. What is the difference between this and the resistor mod, and does it do anything or is it just another money making scheme?

Thanks for the link. I think I will find your site helpfull.

I understand about the resistor. My question is, this guy is selling a mod that looks like it is the same, but connects to the O2 sensor. What is this suposed to do vs what the resistor is suposed to do?
Re: ebay performance chips???

Likely the same thing. If you modify the response from the O2 sensor to make the engine think you're a bit lean, then it will add more fuel.

The difference here, is that the engine will not be able to know that you've done it so you'll always be rich, no matter what.

With the IAT sensor modded, the car can tell it's running rich from the O2 sensor output and correct for it.
