Okay, I know you're supposed to remove the head to get to the lifters, but out of curiosity, is it possible to remove them without taking the head off? I'm having issues with the valve lash and I'm beginning to think the lifters are shot. Not surprising since I'm about to hit 200K miles. If I can do them with the head on I'm doing them tonight, otherwise I have to wait until I get a head gasket and all that noise and have more time.
yes you can get the lifters out without taking the head off, its not easy unless you have the right tool, but its doable.

I've got a telescoping magnet, I figured that'd do the trick but I didn't know if the openings in the head were the same size as the lifter bores or not.
I didn't know if there was enough clearance either, but a telescopice magnet would be the trick. Let us know if you get them out!!!!
I thought the lifter guides/brackets would get in the way, and the casting of the head doesn't allow you to get down there with a socket or anything to loosen the nuts holding them in.
am I right, or just going crazy?

We shall see. I just know I've done the valve lash too many times and it's still not right. I've replaced the studs, nuts, bla bla bla... They stop rattling until the first time I hit the upper RPMs and it all goes down hill from there. The only thing I can conclude is the lifters are shot. Maybe I should just wait to take the head off anyway?
check it out, I think you may have to.. I've got a bad memory, it was almost 2 years ago that I tore my spare block apart, lol!
yes you must remove the head to remove the lifters, there are 2 anti rotation brackes that bolt in over the lifters keeping the rollers ligned up

Yeah I opened her up last night and started poking around. I pulled the rockers and pushrods out, took one look down inside, shook my head, and put everything back together. Sh*tty. Alright, well thanks for the input guys.
