ECU Swap...big problem.
Wednesday, June 21, 2006 1:43 PM
Alright, My Z24 is a 96, which of course cant utilize the HPT Software, so my wish is to swap to a 97 ECU and engine harness. I have been calling around to salvage yards, and they all give me the run around how they go by service ID's, whcih they do, but they wont even sell them to me by engine/tranny. I call, tell them I need an ECU for a 97 Chevy Cavalier 2.4 5 speed, they wont do it, they dont even list that information with them. So basically, I need to produce the right ID for a 97/2.4/5sp ECU, which I can do one of two ways. Someone knows the right ID, which would be nice but doubtful. Or I could find a 97 2.4 5sp z24, take the VIN, call the dealer and see if they would give me the ECU ID, which I'm not even sure if they will or not. Also, the salvage yards tell me taht the computer will have to be programmed by the dealer to insure full satisfaction, I don tknow why it would have to be "programmed" in the first place, but anyway. I need to find a way to get one of these ID numbers. If someone with a 97 5sp Z24 would be willing to let me borrow their Vin, that would be GREAT!!

First off it would not have to be reprogrammed. I'm not sure what id they are referring to. I know most junkyards in my area you call and tell them what you are looking for and they tell you if you have it. We usually just go looking around different yards until we find what we want. I have to do the same thing you are doing to my 96 Z24 as well. Also try Car-parts.com

I did car-parts.com, all of them are by the service ID as well, and some say 2.4, but you call, and they dont know what tranny, they want the ID as well, we dont have any you-pulls around here.

Just get any 97 PCM, a 97 VIN of a similar model, and go to the dealer and get it reflashed. You don't need any ID number, just those two things.

The service id is the part number for the computer. Find the part no and you've got the service id. Yards have listed ecm's like this for many years. The old OBDI ecm's would have the chip pulled before the ecm was stored. Then it would fit any engine/car/trans which came with that particular ecm.

If you can find some of the 4 letter codes which were used with the OE pcm then you might have better luck. Otherwise, you should expand your search on car-part to other areas, and try having one sent in from a yard that's more helpful.

Isnt a dealer reflash upwards of like $300??? I would rather pay 35$ out of a junkyard and beable to run it. So even a 97 2.2 ECU would be fine, as long as it was reflashed?

No, its about $50

Yeah, as long as you get a 97 ECU, you can get it flashed to whatever you want, all you need is the VIN and the ECU.

ALL 97-99 PCM's ARE ALL THE SAME , ONLY DIFFERENCE IS HOW THEY ARE FLASHED

ive been saying that for years

actually...... 97-98 has one part number, 99 another, and 00-02 another....... the part number depicts the hardware, there is a seperate number for the flash ID.

I seen a GM ECM part number break down on the net, just cant remember where....... from what I can find now:
12210553 = 00-02 (non ecotec/2200)
16228016 = 97-99
16215830 = 96
16231851 = 96

But I had seen another break down for a different 99 ECM.... just need to find it.

Once I get some time, I'll be flashing a few ECM's..... couple 98's, 99's, and '00+....... all 2.4's... maybe put a few up in the classifieds.

If anyone is wondering, the service ID for a 97 2.4 5speed is 16228016

yea...still need the reflash ID, which the dealer cant/wont give to me. So basically, they still want the money to reflash it.

Of course they do, how else would it get flashed? You can do it with HPT, but you will need a license for both the original OS and the OS you are putting on there.

I know, but if I could get the 4 letters of the ID out of the dealer, then I could go to an autoyard and match up what I need....but they say they cant give that to me, or they just wont give it to me, so they still get the business of reflashing it.

I don't know what ID you are looking for... all you need, as said above, is a 97 PCM. Just go to the yard, and say "I need a PCM out of a 97-98 Cavalier or Sunfire" THAT IS ALL YOU NEED. If the junkyard starts asking you for ID's (whatever that means).

I understand that....I am trying to save myself the money of getting it reflashed, plain and simple. Also it would be nice not to have to get it reflashed due to the fact, it has to get reflashed in the car...so that means I have to trailor my car to the dealership after I get the wiring harness and computer in, inorder to get it reflashed. This way, if I bought an ECU out of a 97 5sp, then I could put it in, and be done with it.

Then ask for an ECU out of a 97 5 Speed.... still don't see the need for any ID numbers, they don't tell you anything but the part number of the ECU anyway.

Another wierd thing, I am seeing some 99 cav's with the 16228016 part number for the computer. And I know that is the correct part number for a 97-98, because a few of the autoyards when I was calling checking prices were able to atleast tell me the year of the car.

All of the salvage yards dont keep records like that, and hardly any keep cars around, they pull the parts, and put them on shelves, and the two around that do have cars laying around, either didnt have a 97 5-speed, or the ecu's were pulled out of them and put on the shelf, only known by the part numbers.

I've been going through the same thing. Finally found a ECU from a '98 Manual Cav. See if this helps any...

I am also looking for an engine harness, because from what I was informed, the interior harnesses are the same(plug that comes through the firewall) just the engine harnesses are the same. Are both 97-98 engine harnesses the same? Thank you.

You must have some weird junkyards. Here is florida walk in find a cavay the year you want and take it. I do not see the problem as long as it is either a 97-98 ECU, no reflashing needed. Also as for the wiring harness, SpeedRacer posted a long time ago ECU connectors this will allow you to use your harness but swap to a 97 ECU. I might be doing this route.
