Exhaust Quesiton/Comment

Ok, first let me thank all of you who have given me input on my 1991 Cavalier Circle Track Racecar. It is my hope that with your input I'll be able to compete.

Last night I cut the old (Brand New) Thrush turbo muffler off and replaced it with a straight through glass pack muffler. According to what I have read on here, this should help. I do however, only have a 2" exhaust. From what I have read here, I want to install a 2.5" exhaust.

My question(s) are this. How much will this help? Is it worth it? Also, if I do install a 2.5 exhaust, how much more will a performance exhaust (if I can find one) help vs one that I can get at Advance Auto Parts?

Thanks

give people more than 6 hours. most people from 830 to 230 are at work or school or doing something better than roaming on
JBO

2.5 inch exhaust is too big for your car. unless you are pushing out high HP. 2.25 inch exhaust is just fine.

andj ust a local exhaustshop bend you some pipe then put it on for you. and before you ask "How much will that cost?" you will have to shop around and ask

Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!

I have an idea of how much it will cost. Thanks for the info. My real question I guess is this: Is it worth tearing out a perfectly good 2" exhaust and replacing it with a 2.25"? Will I see large gains, or minimal gains?

Thanks

well of course it's going to be 'minimal' Its only an exhaust upgrade.. unless there was a turbo or other form of forced induction attached to the piping I mean, you'll enjoy the change, but don't expect to be in a totally different league now that you upgraded your exhaust.

I suggest a turbo.....

Thanks GT. Unfortunitly, a turbo would get me booted from the track.

It won't be a great gain, but under your rule restrictions, any little bit is going to help. The bigest restriction, in the exhaust, will still be in the stock manifold. Did you/will you be porting it out a little bit larger? If so, the exit on these manifolds will probably be the gratest restriction.

I still think your best upgrade will be the '94-'97 motor, it has a higher compression ratio and a hydraulic roller cam. That combined with the stamped 1.6 rocker arm conversion, you'll get a more noticeable gain and still look stock. Just put your stock valve cover and induction system on there and you'll do fine. For added protection put an oil pump from a '93 or older motor on there, it has a slightly higher volume and pressure, to protect the motor at higher rpms.

The problem with the newer motor is mostly money, but also that there is a very grey area in the rules about that. It is suposed to be the engine that came with the car.

As for porting anything. Once I get the confidence that I can do it without screwing myself, I will be doing it.
