throttle body boaring question
Tuesday, June 27, 2006 4:32 PM
hey guys, i just had a stock throttle body boared out by a good friend of mine at a machine shop. it actually came out very well. it was a fairly smooth cut, and the new inner diameter is 56mm. we took about 12 cuts in to get to 56mm, the only weird thing is when we were making the cut for about 54mm, a new hole opened up inside, and it looks like it goes straight through to one of the vacuum lines on the other side.

everything was setup, indicated, and centered perfectly with the inside of the narrowest part (since the wide upper lip is offset) of the throttle body so i know the hole isn't off center at all. i definately dont want to install it on my motor yet since that hole would probably cause a big vacuum leak.

so what i'm asking is if anyone else has had this "vacuum hole" problem and what can be done to fix it?

by the way, this throttle body came off the same motor as mine (2200), which was a 2001 cavalier ls, and my car is a 2002 cavalier base.

Congrats...you have just made a paperweight. You went too far and went into the IAC passage.

nope like hypsy said you just made a pretty looking paper weight that happened on my first attempt also and it was nothing but problems trying to cover the hole, trying to make it work, etc. just get another TB and bore it just slighly off center AWAY from the IAC port , i went 1mm off center on my the ecotec TB and it worked perfect, hypsy is proof of that

Oh yeah...mine is friggin' awesome. The gain was instantly noticable on my car.

ok first off hypsy, it wasnt the IAC port i went into. it was one of the smaller vacuum lines, the one next to the brake plug. thanks for your arrogance though.

Nutcase, im thinking about trying it, the only problem is there's a small pinhole for the vacuum pointing straight down, if any of the solder gets in there, then this throttle body really will be just a paperweight.

04eco (theN/Aautoone), the 1mm offset sounds like agood idea, but that would throw the hole off center from the throttle arm which would mean id have to drill holes offset on the new plate to line up everything and id doubt it would function correctly. the other problem with it is that i was shooting for a 56mm bore, if i offset it 1mm, id still only reach a 54mm bore. but thanks for your help dude, worst comes to worst i dig up a 2.3 quad4 throttle body from the junkyard and make that work.

tbag - If you want a Q4 TB, I've got one sitting at my house that I used as a temp while my stocker was being bored out.

PM me if you need it.

you'll still end up with the 56mm and yes you'll have to off set the holes on the plate to and unless its different from the ecotec TB itll all still function the same otherwise dont really know what to tell ya on making it work, patching wont be a good idea

what about tapping the hole, put in a threaded rod with locktite, then bore it again so its smooth.
i dunno if it'd work or if you need that passage for something.

I can't see it working. Once you run into a vacum line you're screwed. I'd find either thje 2.3L t.b. or use the t.b. from your car, and have that bored out with the proper specs.

hey guys it all fixed! i took it back the shop and had my friend weld the hole shut, then he threw it back on the bridgeport and reboared it at 56mm so that it was perfectly round again. after that we drilled out the vacuum line since the weld filled it shut and reoiled the bearings for the throttle arm. it actually worked out really well, and the weld job came out great. sounds like a pain in the ass but it wasn't that bad at all.

now ive just got to have the new 56mm throttle plate made (with the right tolerances) and it'll be done.

thanks for the advice guys.

I was just going to suggust filling the hole, and redrilling and tapping a line for it somewhere else. Vacume is vacume doesnt matter as long as it comes from close to the original line.

Im running a 95 LN2 2.2L soon to be supercharged, with a 58 or 60mm throttlebody that we have to bore out. My question here is, does the 95 ln2 have any wierd vac lines or just the IAC stuff.
