I just picked up a Pacesetter 4:1 header that is not coated and is slightly rusted I'm assuming I could just sand off the rust and paint it with a high-temp paint. Is this correct or does anyone have any other suggestions?

get the header bead blasted , then follow the recomendations of the paint company you use for the high temp paint
also get 1500 degree paint , any lower and it has a lot better chance of burning back off
uh, here's my suggestion: don't paint it... get it blasted and jet-hot coated or coated with a similar ceramic coating.

Your local phone book should be able to tell you who does it. Painting them is kinda useless as it just flakes back off again.

You can get jet-hot to do it themselfs. You'll have to ship them the header, and it may be like $100 but it is definatly worth it. I personally think jet-hot is the best coating to put onto any kind of exhaust manifold. Call them and see what they charge.

I said blasted mine then painted it and baked the 1500 degree paint on in a oven...and guess what it burned off.

When ever this one goes I'm just going to get a ceramic coated one. Getting yours jet coated is not a bad idea.

I used Dupli-Color High Temp the first time I painted my header. I chemically stripped the paint, washed the header, scuffed it, Prep-Sol'ed it, painted it and cured it according to the directions. The first time I started the motor, once it warmed up the paint started to blister.
I pulled the header and did all the prep work again, this time I used the VHT High Temp Coating. A year and a half later it's still in tact. The black turns a dark charcoal gray, but no blistering, flaking nor rust. I've drive the car daily, rain or shine(no salt water beaches yet though), even have made quite a few pass down the 1/4 mile. A year and a half with 20K miles no problems.
I've always had good results with the VHT products, but you must follow their directions. Proper surface prep, application and curing and the VHT works well for a home applied product. I would still reccomend getting it coated, especially if you live in the snow belt, but the VHT has been good for me.
