I was having a discussion with my freind and we were wondering if you could use something like a vafc and adjust valve timing on a 2.4vvt cobalt motor?
just wondering

Ok last time.....
VVT IS NOT VTEC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT IS ALL!

I used to race cars, now I race myself.
5K PB: 24:50
10K PB: 54:26
2 completely different things
vtec changes valve lift
vvt changes timing
^^^ yep he is correct.... i work at the toyota plant in kentucky and we learned everything about vvt and stuff when i started..... vvt is controled by the computer which inturn opens a valve we call the oil control valve in the valve cover wich makes the oil passages going to the vvt gears larger which increases oil pressure... ok inside of this vvt gears is a passage so the oil can flow through when the pressure is high enough it physically moves the gear thus advancing timming by 10 degrees on both the intake cam and exhaust cam... i work in V6 so it as 4 of these gears and 4 of the valves.... but yeah he is correct....

Good info!! now a question knowing what you just said could something be used to open the valve earlier, or when you wnat it to to advance sooner? I would assume that the computer opens this valve at a certain RPM, or maybe WOT (some kind of preset time in the ECU). SO if you knew when that was, and maybe used something to open sooner maybe (not saying for sure) gains could be had.

Was not even thinking about that. I remember reading that they do on CobaltSS.net. Also reading about the Hahn kit for the 2.4 in the Solstice. 290WHP on 15psi and stock motor. nice set-up.
FU Tuning
its over 340whp in the solstice now
it would be possible , but unlike the vtech where its off and on
vvt works off certian pressure levels , for each deree of advance
depending on the signal source and what type of signal its looking for to actuate that valve a black box or simialr setup might work. how many input and what type is it looking for? 0-5v? that would be nice..
like a 0 = 0 advance and 5 = 10 degree or something similar

Sven you totally quarterloafed your computer..
So, if i got it right, VVT is the Cam gear changing timing (like an auto adjusting cam gear)?, not valve lobe changes (VTEC), guess i was kinda baffled how that worked.

yes my friend has a corolla XRS that has the same motor as the celica gt-s and they make a product that you can change the rpm that the VVT kicks in at... it changes the rpms from 7k on that motor to like 5500 or so.... will be fast as hell because once his VVT kicks in he starts to pull on me.... till then my eco is pulling away

but 7k

hes pulling me.... lol....

yes you are correct.... its the cam gear the part that bolts to the cam is stationarry bout the outside moves so once the outside moves it inturn moves the cam. it can advance a max of 10 degrees...
sorry guys I was drunkwith my freind and we were just bs at each other.

I believe the Toyota VVT is slightly different then the GM VVT....... but same concept (just different ways of getting it done)

^^^ true i guess LOL i heard they are hte same but i dont know.... all i know is the toyota VVT is pretty amazing how it works..... very impressive IMO.... cause my friends corolla pulls like a mofo once that vvt kicks in.... i couldnt imagine how this motor we build pulls once it does.. it makes 280 hp..
