Help! Deal or no deal? (Magnaflow cat-back + cat)
Tuesday, July 11, 2006 2:34 PM
Hey guys. I just wanna make sure I don't blow a wad of cash on either the wrong thing, or a bad deal.

I have every intention of getting the Magnaflow cat-back for my 01 Cav with 2200 engine (4dr if it makes a difference), and happened to stumble onto this auction:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1,1&item=130001265640&ih=003&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT

I wanted to know the following:

is model 15761 the right model cat-back for my car?

is the price good considering he is including a high flow cat as a "bonus"?

does anyone know if this guy is good to deal with?

any guesses as to which high flow cat he might be including?

does the magnaflow cat-back come with a resonator already thrown on?

I plan to ask him a few of these questions, but would prefer the feedback of my fellow JBO peers first. Thanks guys!

Not worth it, go custom and save yourself a few hundred bucks - not to mention that catback doesnt come with a resonator, and will sound like a bumble-bee.

The price of the cat is definitely hidden in that price, as its pretty steep for just the cat-back.

BTW If you do decide to go custom, PM me and I can help you pick out what you want, and answer any questions you might have.

Hmmm, I've heard though that the magnaflow sounds decent. I originally wanted to go custom but my problems are:

1. There is not a shop here in Brooklyn, NY that will do mandrel

2. The one place that does crush bent charges about $400

I guess I could put a resonator on it myself somewhere down the line as I am probably gonna U-Bolt it and see if it leaks (at which time I'll weld and add the resonator).

In all honesty, I like the idea of just buying a pre-fabbed and doing the install myself, atleast this way I know it'll fit and I know what I'm getting (nobody wants an aluminum exhaust)... I'm more of an instant gratification guy who trusts his own hands rather then a possibly shady shop

I guess another question to add to the list is: Does anyone know of a reputable place that does mandrel pipes in Brooklyn, NY :p

Thanks again

$400 BUCKS!!!!Damn.....the shop i got my 2.25" crush bent at before did everything including welding, bending, all the piping, and install for $120 bucks. Id call them and tell them they're crazy and to go fly a kite.

yea they aren't looking for people who know what they're doing with cars, they tailor to the rich kid who wants to say he is a tuner by adding one of those fake stick-on hood scoops

I really don't know anywhere else nearby that uses mandrel though honestly I'd go for it instead if I had the choice. in the meanwhile, this is choice 2. I humbly wait for answers to the questions above

You don't need mandrel, for the amount of money you save you can buy another part that will gain you more. Honestly, compression bent is just fine for our cars - NOT CRUSH BENT. Try a midas, talk to their exhaust guy.

hmmm, i haven't looked to midas, though i would be concerned with their work... had any experience with them?

called up 3 midas shops, one doesn't do full pipe jobs, another does bending (thogh I assume crush since he said they don't do "performance pipes" anymore) and wants $250 at the minimum, the other says he can't give me a guess-timate price without seeing the car first(ie: he was trinyg the lure bit)

I think I'm gonna stick with the Magaflow, I was just hoping for some answers

Thats the same exhaust that RKSport sells, http://www.rksport.com/product/p_02093515/view_detail . and its only $349 so if you want to get it atleast get if cheaper from a trusted source!

zeroburn is right, I did hear somewhere that rk uses there own piping and a magnaflow muffler, however, if they are both mandrel and 2-1/4 then they are virtually the same. So save a few bucks and go with rk's. Besides, they dont have a rep of jacking people like ebay.

nah i think thats a great price.....but true you cant really trust e-bay...unless performance curve has their own website then youd be able to do research about them..

you might want to try nathan from addictiveperformance.com also...he might carry the 15761# for a cheaper price...but doesnt include highflow/k&n...

I was originally looking at the RKSport one, but heard that the true magnaflow is better in terms of performance and sound.... honestly though, I have no objection to the RKSport one, but since they upped the price from when it was $300, I got kinda turned off :p

Both use the same mufflers, same size piping, both are mandrel bent, both are stainless... both sound like crap. And yup, you guessed it, they are the SAME in terms of performance, dont let anyone tell you otherwise!!!! If you're still bent on going pre-made, get the RKSport system, and then order get a 22" long, 4" round Magnaflow muffler (or another 20+ inch resonator of your choice), and install that right after the flange on the cat side.

Will sound decent, you will pay more than getting it custom, and you will be happy.

I just bought the magnaflow cat back for my 2000 z24 and i think it sounds pretty damn good! It has a lot deeper tone that i was expecting, I paid $600 Canadian for it plus shipping... well worth it in my opinion

Get someone to drive your car around and you stand outside then tell me that same thing

In truth though, there is only so much you can do to make an I-4 sound mean... I just don't want it to sound "ricey" is all.... Is there really much of a difference in the tone of the RKSport vs. the true Magnaflow?
