Buy a hi flow converter. You won't net any gains from a test pipe. Help keep the air we all inhale clean.

I'll disagree with everyone here, replacing the cat with a test pipe will free up a few hp.

i dont have money to buy a cat right now, so i thought about just gutting my current one cuz its clogged... but what i havent found an answer to... will a 2.25 inch exhaust pipe bolt to my original? and if i gutted it, would a cheap ebay o2 sim work until i can buy a new cat

Then go onto ebay and buy that cheap O2 sensor and while your there look for a hi-flow cat.

turbo & high performance magazine recently did an article where they replaced all the test pipes on thier project cars with high flow cats and actually gained power back by adding the cat.

from my personal experience my buddy put a full exhaust on his integra...header and catback but he didnt have an aftermarket cat yet so he left the stock on and dynod it at 123 to the wheels. When he put his test pipe on and dynod again he came out with about 10 less torque and his hp dropped to 119. the dyno runs were about a week apart with basically the same outside temp, and for the second dyno the temp on his sheet was 2 degrees colder

Is that article online somewhere, do you know what month it was? I'd like to read it.

There was an article on Sport Compact Car magazine a while ago about exhaust sizing and back pressure on a n/a motor. To sum up that article, they said that the bigger the exhaust size and less back pressure in the exhaust system the more peak hp the motor will make (to an extent). They said the only thing that actually hurts low end power / torque was the use of long tube headers, where the low rpm exhaust pulses aren't pumping each other rapidly enough to make a high velocity flow, but once they all meet in the collector and exhaust from all the cylinders are pushing each other the velocity for the rest of the exhaust system is fine.

Years before that article they had a project car that was a early 90's teal colored Civic hatch. They dyno tested some name brand hi flow cat and cat back exhaust system vs a test pipe that was just basically a open down pipe after the header with no exhaust what so ever connected after it. With the open dump down pipe there was a substantial power increase through out the entire power band. This also was on a n/a motor.

In my personal experience, removing the cat on a j-body made no difference in 1/4 mile times.

Not to mention I think that we all like clean air. If this is not going to be a car stickly for the track I think that everyone would agree to put a cat on it. I for one do not like breathing in smog and such.
