I would have to say both...maybe not raise the engine but just keep it at the original height while you swap mounts.

i did it using the second method, it may take a little muscle but you can get it out, and the upper mount will keep the engine in

I did it by raising the car up and putting it on jack stands, and then used the jack to support the weight of the engine while I swapped out the lower mount.

On Jack stands, did the upper mount first, did not support engine at all for lower.

Lower went in no problem.

I have found if the car is a auto then using a jack is needed, but if a manual not needed.

I've never supported the engine if taking out the lower mount. All it does is stop the engine from moving forwards and backwards....

As long as you're on flat ground.... you should be fine. I've helped change... oh... 10 or so lower mounts? Never once have I jacked it up. If the car isn't lowered, you can get it without even jacking the car up.

you dont need to support the engine on the lower mount.

reason?

the engine is supported by the upper mount and transmission mount,

the lower mount is mainly for rocking back and forth. its not a vertical support mount.

I did mine the first time in a pit (used to work at Jiffy Lube), the 2nd was when i found my front control arm bolt loose (had the car in the air for that one). I agree with what the others said, the motor does not need to be supported to change the mount.
