Okay so We (my dad and I) picked up a 96 sunfire 2.2 3spd from a friend with a blown motor....so we got a new used motor from an 94 cause from what all I read the 2.2 was the same from 94-97. So working on it today I came to find that the 96 has a cam position sensor on the back of the block above the coil packs, the 94 block doesn't have this....so Am I Screwed or is there a way to make it work? Can the 96 computer run it without the cam sensor? I really need some help here these 2.2's aren't my thing.... LD9 ftw!.....lol but seriously need some help guys.....
Well, this is covered on the LN2 history page. The new engine fits into the older car with no problems, but as you've found there's no cam sensor on the old engine. There's also some fittings and pieces which are different. I've posted the diffeences in the 2nd gen forum before.
The pcm can run the engine in batch fire mode without the cam sensor. You'll get a CEL and possibly fail emissions testing if they test in your area.

Okay, so it will run without it just with a CEL. But How will it run in batch mode? Will it sputter or be rough or will it just be a CEL and worse emissions? Cause I can live with a CEL and there is no Emissions testing here, so just HOW it will run I guess is the question...?
I dunno what exactly it would take on the 94 motor. I imagine theres no place at all for it, so if swapping the cam you'll probably still have to bore a hole in the 94 block to allow yourself to put in the cam sensor.
The engine will probaly run without the cam sensor, but not very well.
LD9 FTL
LA1 FTW!!
Whatever LD9 forever!!
Anyways can anyone tell me for sure How it will run in In batch mode?
It will run like a 94 lol. Just start it up and find out, nothing seriously bad will happen from that, but you'll know for sure.

better a delay than a disaster.
Often without the CEL you wouldn't even know you're in batch mode. GM can't allow emissions to get horribly worse, and their customers wouldn't stand for driveability falling apart, if a single sensor failed.

My brother's 98 Z24 has apparently been running in batchfire mode since February. It has a CEL for the cam sensor, he put a new one in and it didn't fix the problem, lol he can even remove the cam sensor completely and it still runs. Seems like it runs just fine but it does run rich, the plugs were black and fuel economy isn't quite what it should be.
