One intake hasn't shown to show any improvement over another. Save yourself up to $120 and just get an E-Bay intake and put a K&N filter on it. Otherwise, what you said is true.

Any real power gains are to be made from doing head, valve train and internal work. It's allot of reading, but read the following links for more info:
2200 power record
2.2/2200 OHV Rocker Arm List
2200 valve springs

Those are just some of the threads on the 2.2L/2200 OHV motors. The search button will help you find more.

To go faster, you also need to do some work with the transmission. Many of the mods done to the motor, will increase the power output, but could actually make you slower, if you don't make the appropriate mods to the transmission, especially the automatics. The following links deal primarily with the 3sp TH125C/3T40 automatics, but there is also some good info on the 4sp 4T40E.
Stock Torque Converters, 3 Speed Gears and more
3 speed auto, finally done and finally installed.

Do your research, find out what you want from the car and make a plan. Unless you have a ton of money, be reasonable with your plan. Remember, power costs money, how much money (skills and time) you have determines how fast you can go. It's allot of work to make these motors fast, but it can be done.

Good Luck!
