Ok, I have a 2002 Cavalier with a 2200 and 5 speed trans.
I just bought a 1995 Z24 with a 2.4 litre out of a 1999 Z24.
The Z is being parted out(see classifieds), I was thinking of putting the 2.4 litre in my car.
I want to know if it is something that is doable?
will it bolt up to my trans?
and what all needs to be swapped in?
Im going to assume the ECU from the Z will need to be swapped into my car.
will there be any consequences? or little problems i should run into?
if it is as simple as dropping it in, hooking everything up and swapping computers, that would be mint... if there is more to it (and obviously there is going to be), i would greatly appreciate any guidance you all could provide!!

Being as your going from a 2k to a pre 2k motor.. might be better off just leaving it alone unless you have lots of time to make it work.
My Cav
I give up...
i'm buying a VW those people love trees, so they should love eachother too... "Andy"
that sounds like info i needed lol, im selling whatever motor i dont use..... once i find out the mileage on the 2.4... i would love to have that in my car, as driving my "parts car" home was a blast with all the power i never had with the 2200 lol.

I don't think the trans will bolt up, but IIRC, the 2.4 in the 99 is the same in the '02's. I know that the head castings are the same
http://www.j-body.org/forums/read.php?f=30&i=33607&t=33607#33607, so the rest of the motor should be the same. you'd have to use the ECU and wiring of course.
the question would be if the tranny would bolt up.

now the ecu i knew i had to use... that wasnt much of an issue... the tranny being the issue i was most concerned about, as well as motor mount locations and what not. you dont think the 5 speed getrag (assuming thats the one my 02 has in it, never looked into it, but im pretty sure i heard that all 02 5 speeds would be the getrag), will bolt up?

I'm not sure that the 2200 used the same trans as the 2.4. I would assume that '02's all used the same 5 speed, but it's not really good to work off of assumptions like that. I bet Eric (97cavieLS) or John Lenko would know.

you will need a 2.4 getrag tranny, flywheel and clutch since they arent the same. You will need a 2000+ 2.4 engine wiring harness and pcm. Since the motor is a 99, the harness is a direct replacement onto that engine. You can keep the axles and tranny mounts since they are the same. I think thats all, if you have any other questions, let me know.
thanks man, the car actualy has a 5 speed in it that seems to work fine, so i could swap it all, BUT i wont get to keep my B7M short throw will i? lol.. i know i know, minor gripe for someone wanting to do a motor/tranny swap haha...
on a lighter note, i hope i get to selling the parts off that damn car to get myself outa the debt im in lol

haha yeah, so i contacted the guy who i got the car off, for some info... the motor has 150k on it, the tranny in the car is the stock one from the car (210k), so i dont think its worth it... i dont plan to race or anything anyway, its just my commuter... SOO im gunna pull the motor, clean it up, put the stock intake and TB back on, sell the HO parts, and sell the motor as is, just like every other piece on that car, dont know if anyone would be willing to buy the tranny, it shifts fine, nothing seems to be wrong with it... but high miles.

You can make the tranny from the 95 work, but its not worth it, just get a getrag 2.4 tranny from a 2000+. That way you wont have to swap over the shifter cables and assembly, just keep yours, it would also allow you to keep you B&M

Plus the getrag is a FAR better tranny anyways. I just bought a 97 Z with no motor or tranny and i am doing the extra work to put the getrag into it and dumping the Isuzu tranny that supposed to be in there.
thanks for that info man,... unfortunately, like i said, im probly not going to bother, just gunna sell the HO parts, and the header on it (appears to be a nice looking long tube, pics when i remove it). and then selling the motor.

How many miles on the engine and how much you ask for?
FYI if you try to swap over the older tansmission you would have to weld in new trans mounts too.

I would say it would be worth it, but if you are smart you would keep the 95Z cause if it is a 5-speed it is OBD 1. You can chip the car and do a few things others of us wish we could do.
You can put an Eco in there with minimal problems. You can see PJ's thread in the 3rd gen forum I think it was in. It would be alot easier than swaping a 2.4 into your car and it would drop right in. Your wire harness is useable as well I believe. All you would need is the ECU and I think that clips in also. I am sure you would need some other things but the major ones are stated.
thanks, but i was only going to do this swap because i had the motor, and as for the one asking about the motor... has 160k on it, i dunno how much i would ask when i get it pulled out and cleaned up... and i wont ship, so unless u can pick it up in central maine, no can do.
