i have a Head and block in my basement....its the 95 2.3....not the 086...anyone know wat the compression of this head is.......and would it be worth swaping it with my 2.4 head?

For 1995, a balance shaft-equipped version of the 2.3 L version was produced. A clever arrangement ensured a constant load on the shafts: The crank drove one shaft, which drives the second, which drives the oil pump. However, the shafts spun at twice the engine rpm, forcing the red line to be reduced from 6800 to 6500 rpm. Output was 150 hp and 150 ft·lb. This was the only Quad 4 family engine produced in 1995. This was known as a transitional year for the engine family.
9.5:1 Compression
^^ yea...in other words..that head on that block has 9.5:1 compression...but on a 2.4 block would probably raise the compression to like 11:1...give or take....but other than that there is no benefit...the head its self is no better than any 2.4 head
thats basically wat i was asking....i might go all motor and this other engine has a spun bearing.....so ur saying that head would give me an 11:1 compression

probably higher...youd have to run premium gas to be safe...but thatll happen with any quad head you put on a 2.4 block..and if you did this i suggest using an 086 quad head..just read some of the other posts on this page and youll see exactly how to do it
i just figured id use this one...cause well its free and sitting in my basement....so u think if i port it out i can drop the compression a bit

well...porting it out isnt gonna change your compression...compression is where the piston is not where the ports are..ofcourse giving it a good port and polish is gonna help but itll never come close to the 086...but since its free i guess you cant really argue...so if your dead set on it get it a good PnP job...make sure you have the right manifolds for it..get the secret cams(if you havnt already) and expect to run around 11.7:1 compression(unless you change your pistons)
thats really good NA compression and its streetable..just remember PREMIUM GAS!
oh...and youll still have to mod this head like you would any other quad head to fit...the coolant lines will have to be bored out to match the 2.4

stock is 9.5:1 right.....are the secret cams gonna do anything for compression wise...and if i were to run lets say 10.5:1 compression.....could i run boost at 10.5.....i might just go all out NA....but boost is fun lol......wat kinda number u think i could put down with 11.5:1 compression compared to stock

the cams have nothing to do with compression either...compression relates to how much the air and fuel in the cylinder gets compressed..in order to raise or lower compression usually you have to either change your stroke or your pistons...(pistons being the most common and easy)
yes you can run boost with 10.5:1 but its harder to tune correctly..which is sounds like you reallyyyy need to be reading up on it...theres a few posts on here for that

Cams won't change your static compression ratio, but they can change your dynamic compression, which is all that actually matters. Secret cams, however, won't really have any effect.

Anything bigger than the Ho cams (in the quads family) will change your dynamic compression. Just take my W41 for example. 086 head with Ho cams, 9.5:1 compression = 175psi per cylinder, 9.63:1 = 195psi, 10:1=210psi.
12:1 with Hot grind 2 = 265psi. With Ho cams it would have been alot higher.
Also, the head doesn't have a compression. ALL 2.3 heads have a combustion chamber of 48CC. You can go with a 955, 753, 086, 456 and still get the same compression. Going with a 456 head is A WASTE OF TIME. Not even worth it. Go buy a set of pistons other than swapping head.
15:1 can be used for daily driver. You need to know what you are doing when you go with high compression. The cams are more of a problem than the compression. The compression won't stall the car at the light and it won't make it idle like a 500CI big cam V8.

how much compression could the stock head handle?....so ur saying i could get pistons and get 10-11:1 compression?....i was under the impression the head on the 2.3 was stronger

If you break the casting from compression, it's because you had one major problem.
It's "stronger" because the springs are better, the valves are bigger, ....
Yes you can get piston for any compression. That's the real way to do it. Since you don't know me, I'm running 12:1 compression on a 086 head and that's not much. There's some guys running 400+ hp on those head.

ok im unbolting this 2.3 head this week and taking it up to get a 5 angle valve job and sum other goodies...wat all needs to be done to fit the 2.4 block? cause i can have the shop do all that stuff while they have it

is there a big difference when it comes to the swap or is it a bolt up...i kno the coolant needs to be ported...anyone got specs on how much to port?

you have to line it up with the head gasket..the 2.4 one i believe and simply grind out the coolant lines to match the gasket(or close to it)...and thats it
after that it all just plug and play?

There are two ways to do it, but the head has to be matched to the 2.4 head gasket regardless. You can either use a 2.4L gasket w/o EGR (99-02) that has a large enough fire ring that won't overlap the edges of the combustion chamber...such as a Felpro one like I am using, because the GM 2.4L head gasket will overlap the edges. The other way is to match both the head and a 2.3L gasket with a 2.4L gasket.

so when installing the head which gasket do i use on the 2.4 block.....your saying i could use the 2.3 gasket as long as a i line it up with the 2.4....and also....i have a 98 cavalier...will the 99 gasket still work?

To my understanding, the LD9 block has remained the same throughout its life, so a 99-02 gasket should work on a pre-99" block...but I'm not 100% sure. You may want to contact Merlin Fontaine (magik1109) and find out what gasket he used on his 97'.
