i have a guy coming tommorow to look at one of my engines and he has a 2.3 in his garage he dont know what it came out of how do i identify it if its a ho it will say high output on it if its a w41 it will say w41 but if its neither one of them is any parts desirable does the high output intake come off of w41 and ho engines thanks
intake is the same w41 and HO, block and all internals are the same as well, cams, springs (I think), and computer are what makes a W41. I may miss something else on that list, but that's the main things.
For a complete list of motors, go to quad4forums.com and look in the faq.
If you take a picture of it, we can probably identify it

True, a blind man couldn't miss the HO manifold.
Also if you look at the head on the opposite end from the thermostat housing you will see numbers cast in it, if the last 3 digits are 086 then there's a good chance it's an HO motor and if not the 086 head is THE best flowing head for the 2.3 or the 2.4 motors.
Also if it's not an HO the cams would be good to have as the LD2 or LO has 200* dur @ .050 & .375" lift on both intake and exhaust cams except the 95 motors which had .360" lift.
2000 Z24 5spd header & catback for now.
The Ho manifold was available on the LO, HO, W41.
The Ho cams could be found on Lo and Ho
The 086 head was available on the Lo, Ho, W41
There's a few way to identify a 2.3
First thing to do is check the head #.
955 = 87-89
086= 90-92
753= 93-94
456= 95
then again it's not perfect since head can be swaped and the 456 was a replacement head for the other ones.
Second thing, check the manifolds.
Int - Ho Ext - Lo = Lo
Int - Lo Ext - Lo = Lo
Int - Ho Ext - Ho = Ho
Int - Lo Ext - Ho = Lo
Just like the head casting, manifold could have been swapped.
Third thing, Block casting number.
326, 442, ....
That is not 100% accurate for the year but with the head it can help.
Fourth thing, flywheel or flex plate?
Flexplate = Lo for sure without exception
Flywheel = could be anything
Fifth thing, take out the spark plugs to see the pistons
Valve relief = Ho or W41
No valve relief = Lo
Six, check the cams
.375" = Lo
.410" 212* = Ho
.410" 218* = W41
.410" 226* = HG1
.430" 224* = HG2
The valve springs are the same on ANY 086 head.
The only difference for the W41 are the cams and the Eprom.
I bought a Lo with 086 head, Ho intake manifold and Ho cams so you got to go with what i gave you.
Now that was my last post of the month so PM me for questions.
