I've been told that you can do some transfers
Wednesday, December 06, 2006 3:12 PM
I have a 2002 z24 2.4l with the 5 speed transmission on it. I was told that you can put some of the parts from the Beretta 2.3l HO Quad-4 on it to get some more power from the engine. What are the parts that are compatible between the engines to give me some more Hp and TQ, and where is the best place to find them?

Short answer...

-Entire top end
-Oil pump

CHM which manifold, or are intake and exhaust both compatable?

Intake is the only one compatible with a 2.4L head. However, it requires that either you use Chris Fontana's adapter plate or port-match the manifold.

the Classified section on this site. toward the bottom
you can swap the HO (high output) intake manifold, the famous 086 head, and the intake and exhaust cam. read the stick at the top for the ca swap. search for the rest

So, when I do this intake manifold swap, can I use my stock throttle body or do I need to get another one?

get the 2.3 TB as it is slightly bigger

the 2.4 works fine too, ran the 2.3TB originally, but i enjoy the lower end i get from the 2.4TB

the 2.4 just requires that you bore out the bottom right and top left holes on the throttle body to accomidate the larger bolts that the 2.3L uses.

I also had it on my car and it worked just fine.

So if I just reset my ECU after installing this manifold, I'll be ok. No computer problems at all?

forget parts..just get the whole HO engine and drop it in! a HO quad can get over 200hp with just bolt ons...how many "parts" are you gonna have to adapt to get that?

I actually thought about that, but then getting new computers and redoing the engine mounts and such, I don't have the down time for that.

That's because you didn't research. 2.3's and 2.4 use the same mounts. Computer are pretty much the same and Hp tuner will take care of that. No wiring to change.

2.3 Ho

hes right..no mount changes and no wiring changes if you have HPT..if not changing the pcm is not a big deal....whoever told you that you NEEDED to change things is wrong

But isn't his car obd2, the HO quads were all obd1. It seems as though the wiring would have to be different. Also, he wont just be able to drop the engine in and be done with it. Won't he more than likely have to replace the entire front end with a HO front end? Engine, waterpump, hoses, transmission.... like the entire longblock?

Vtec- All of the lag, none of the turbo.

OMG !! where do you people get these ideas from? listen and listen carefully...ALL OF YOU!
if your car has a 2.4 twin cam in it now and you have a 5speed transmission...the HO quad 4 engine will BOLT UP to your transmission and motor mounts in the bay...if you have HPT then you dont need to change wiring...if you DONT have HPT then you simply need to get a 1995 z or gt pcm and go to town..this isnt as hard as some of you make it out...no wonder most guys on here dont even look into it

has anyone swapped the 2.3 HO into their cav?

so that doesnt answer about everything else in his engine bay. what about the coolant tank, the hoses, radiator, fan... how will that all bolt up to the 2.3l

i didnt answer THOSE because i shouldnt have too...but what was i thinking right??
he doesnt have to change the coolant ..the fan..the radiator..the hoses ..etc......why would he?
you have to remember, in 1995 the 3rd gen Jbody CAME with a quad4..and in later years even though they changed the engine they didnt change the other parts..and the quad that came in the 95 is pretty much the same as the HO(mounting wise)...you even use your stock water pump.....any more questions??

Yeah, why are you a jerk?

More seriously though, I just dont see how he is supposed to just pull the engine out of a GTZ, 442, or Achieva and drop it in his car with only a slight programming modification to the computer. There is no way it can be as easy as plucking two engines out and rehooking it all back up. What about the exhaust on his Z24, will it handle the HO? What about the air intake, will it provide enough for the HO? What about the oil pump, and the fuel pump? The amount of each taken in by the HO is way more than that taken in by the Twin Cam.

You say that the quad was in the earlier models, I knew this already. But the extra power and emissions from the HO seem as though you would have to some other modification than just a little programming.

The Quad block is a quad block. The only "special" thing about the 95' is the awesome balance shafts and kick-ass oil pump. The 2.4L isn't a quad block but it is built off of it which is why it bolts to the trans just fine. A HO fits perfectly in a cavalier. Why would he want to even bother with the 2.4L exhaust on a motor that revs to 7K+. If you do the H.O. swap, you are going to do a full exhaust. If you can't take a 2.4 stock or aftermarket intake and cut it to fit, then you can't do an engine swap...period. You aren't going to fail emissions from a 180hp motor, as long as it is properly tuned.

My GTZ failed emissions 3 times. And it was meant to have that engine. And what I am saying is that he has to do more than just drop the engine in there and hook up the 2.4 engine bay to it. There has to be more to it than that.

Unless you don't want to run batch fire and you want to use your 2.4L ps pump, then no...It is essentially plug and play.
