2.3L Swap
Sunday, December 10, 2006 1:42 PM
I have a '95 Sunfire Gt with the 2.3L quad four in it. I'm having some cooling problems with it, I was thinking of swapping out my 2.3L . I'm trying to find some info on what other engines would work in my car. I would really like to find a used or rebuilt 2.3l to do a direct swap. Given that '95 was the only year they put the 2.3 in, I was wondering what other year and size of engine would work with out having to do major mods to get it to work.

ditto...early 90s High Output quad4 ...its a direct swap (bolt on ) for your car..even the getrag tranny that came with it will work for you too..lots of info on it if you just look around and search alittle

-Your water pump has most likely had the impellers rot away to @!#$. If you wish to save some cash just replace it (and the thermostat) and do a good coolant flush while your at it and all should be fine !.

-BUT as stated, you could swap in an HO since they seem to be decently cheap at the wreckers in the United States.

For all intents and purposes the 95 auto cars are identical to 96 2.4 cars.
Your easiest swap is to a 96-up 2.4 and having the PCM reflashed to a 96 2.4 flash.
It wont give a huge boost in power, but it will let you use a ton of parts that wont fit now.

A 2.3 HO swap would have all the same issues as any 2.4 car would have.

Well I have already done a bunch of work to this car in the way of changing parts. The water pump is brand new so is the thermostat. Aswell as the timing chain, chain guide and tensioner. As for the '96 and up 2.4s will my '95 tranny bolt up to it? I would think most of the time they throw in the tranny with the new engine. On the 2.4 apart from reflashing the cpu will the rest of the wiring plug right in?
