ecotec into a 2nd gen?
Sunday, December 24, 2006 10:42 AM
I was curious if anyone has installed a 2.4 ecotec from a 3rd gen into a p1 or p2 2nd gen cavy with a V6?

the 2.4 ecotec never came in the cavalier or sunfire. its in the cobalt.
the 2.4 DOHC (different engine) did.

I think he means swapping the 2.4 Eco into a 2nd Gen. As far as I know nobody has done it... but I think it would be pretty cool.... if I'm not mistaken Nitro once made a point that the 2nd Gen was one of the lightest j-bodies... depending on what was in it... so if you get the 2.4 eco into one of the light bodied 2nd gens... would be pretty wicked.... just not sure how difficult that would be. I'm sure somebody will hop on here and let ya know soon enough. lol...

Yes i was referring to a swaping a ecotec into a 2nd gen. The reason i was wondering .... the 3.1 had 140hp and 185tq. And the 3.1 has .7L more displacement thatn the ecotec. But the numbers it puts out are relatively close. And its much lighter, more potential, and much more aftermarket support for it. and i believe it puts out.. 145hp and 150tq. And the ecotecs are a much more reliable engine also with better gas mileage.

Well the numbers your refering to actually are for the 2.2 Ecotec engine... the 2.4 Engine (commonly used in the Solstice, cobalt s/s, and Sky) actually puts down 170 hp and something in the lines of 185 or something torque... so that would be considerably quicker for ya... but if your lookin into just the normal eco, then that would be just as good cause it would prolly be easier to find since the 2.4's are relatively new.

he said and i quote "a 2.4 ecotec from a 3rd gen." key words there is 3rd gen. cobalt dont have a 3rd gen yet. or even a 2nd gen.

the 2.4 ecotec puts out 173 horsepower and 163 lb.-ft. at 4800 rpm.

but no one has done this into a 2nd gen or a 3rd gen j-body. and i dont think you will either

wow thats real nice and when he does it i will be the first to laugh in your face. also if you want to go off keywords then you said and I quote "but no one has done this into a 2nd gen or a 3rd gen j-body." Just because it isnt on the forums doesn't mean it isnt out there. p.s. its Quote not Qoute

im not laughing at him. if he actually does it, that would be great.
but all to often you see posts like this one. i want to swap the 2.0 or the 2.4 eco engine into my car. has anyone done it? whats involed? blah blah etc.

but no one realizes how much work it would be to go into something like that. if he or anyone else has enough money, time, knowledge, and can afford to have a car not being on the road then by all means dude, go for it

never seen an ecotec in one...but i have seen a w41 quad in one..and with the 190hp the quad makes and the easier install it is i cant imagine why id want a weaker engine thats harder to put in

who's done the W41 in a 2nd gen and what is involved. i did a quick search but found nothing. are mounts the same?

speedvisioncav on www.quad4forums.com has one in his 2nd gen ..and he was also the first to prove that the TRS header would fit in a 2nd gen as well...if you can get your hands on one

Please explain to me how the Ecotec is weaker and harder to install than a W41. As far as I can tell there are MINIMAL upgrade parts for the W41 so your stock right around 190HP. There's a HUGE aftermarket base for the Ecotec, especially the 2.2L, and can easily put the motor at HP levels reaching 250HP on STOCK INTERNALS and very low boost numbers.

I do know there is someone currently doing the 2.2L Eco into a 2G Cav. I'm helping supply the parts in fact LOL.

I used to race cars, now I race myself.

there may not be a HUGE aftermarket base for the quad but you really dont need one 190hp compared to what?145hp? thats a pretty big differnce alone ..250hp is pretty good with low boost, but lots of quad guys get that outN/A ...and im not gonna start arguing about which engine is better cus thats not what this thread is about..

I think the swap to a 2nd gen wont be brutal. prolly much the same method as when people do the "swap everything" technique in the pre-00 3rd gens. you'll prolly have to weld new trans mounts too.

quad4s have sick aftermarket with much higher power starting point BUT the eco has parts that are easier to find. I perfer the Eco simply for the sleaved/lighter block. both great engines. we are spoiled compared to most small cars in that department.

The 2.4 Eco would be neat, but in order to make the time worth it, I think you should go 2.4 bottom with a non-VVT head and the S/C. a 2.4 S/C engine would have a nice power curve. the swap will be just like a 2.2 but you need a crank trigger wheel setup for the 7x timing and posible knock sensor changes.
