Question about Walbro 190 and 255lph fuel pump
Tuesday, December 26, 2006 9:38 PM
Are there any drawbacks to installing one of these fuel pumps with no major modifications aside from boltons? Will it cause too much fuel to flow causing flooding or anything like that? Also where are you guys purchasing the pump from?

Thanks

Justin

All I know that there is an install kit that you need for our J cars.. My shop had to order one along with my 255 pump.. I dont know where they ordered it from though.

If "installed" correctly there are no drawbacks, our engines return all uneeded fuel and can regulate what pressures it needs. but if not installed correctly you could experiance a fuel cut when you tank starts to get empty.

kit27 was the one I was told to order when I got my pump... the wiring harness didn't fit, and the pump is loose in the stock location.

Liquidplasma - how do you install the 255 so you don't get fuel cut??? I still get cut @ 1/4 tank.. thanks

Would it possible just to drop in a fuel pump from a 3800 SC??? I have read that they flow pretty close to the Walbro 255, and that should eliminate the fuel cut since you are still using the stock GM setup

you need to cut the cup to get rid of the fuel cut

I am not sure man, it would be good fo rme to do something else... I usually keep my tank almost full anyways, but on road trips that extra 100-150KM would make a nice difference.

I remember seeing that post and we had it printed out beside us when we put my pump in... but we didn't think it would be a good idea, we did some custom stuff and got my pump right down to the bottom, but obviously that was not enough.

If you cut the bottom out, you loose the advantage of having the canister too... what are people doing with the 190lph pumps???

why not cut the brackits that hold the pump at a certen level (about half way down) inside the "cup" so it can sit lower........?

From Colin

"cut the 3 fingers that hold the pump inside the cup, in half. cut the bottom of the cup out, and push the pump all the way down inside the cup. install the filter sock, and now the pump should sit just off the bottom of the tank."

Something like that at least. He posted it up on Racer's Edge. Guess he did that on a Eco, and it hasnt had any of the fuel cut issues (normaly when you cut the cup, the pump is still a inch or so off the bottom of the tank, this additional mod puts it right on the bottom)

that is what we did. we cut those little plastic "s" things and lowered it right to the bottom. but I still have cut at 1/4 tank.. the pump is as low or lower than my stocker was :S... maybe I will collapse and do the the cup mod

how about you just buy the right pump and not worry about the fuel cut?

buy a fuel pump with a little brass barb next to the outlet on the pump. that barb spews out fuel and keeps the module (can/cup) filled and the inlet of the pump submerged. If you look at the stock pump setup, there is a little black hose connected to the stock brass barb. that hose redirects the fuel to the bottom of the can.

The cup is designed to hold fuel when you drive up hills, or go around crazy curves.

DO NOT cutting to the cup, that would result in a lack of fuel to the engine when fuel slashes around in the tank when running low.

PS.... 255LHP is overkill on most setups get a 190lph.....(ZO6's use 255lph, if you need that amount fuel, thats awsome, but i doubt it)

yah, I don't want to cut the cup, I know it's benefits we spent days installing one in my friends 240z car. I thought when I bought this pump I had bought the right one. I would gladly buy another one if I could garuntee it is the right one.

Did you guys ever find a solution to this fuel cut issue? Also, where can I get the CORRECT install kit for our cars for the 255?

ge_forcez22- Did that install kit not work at all.?

it has been a really long time, IIRC the only thing we used was that ribbed hose(factory one cracked during removal), and the rubber o-ring, the wiring harness didn't even come close to fitting, so we just soldered the wires, and I believe there is a pump that has a "brass" fitting somewhere and that apparently prevents the fuel cut, but I am very unimpressed with my 255lph pump and would recommend a 190lph as it seems people have had better luck with it, just make sure you get the high flow/high pressure one. :cheers

So this is what you were referring to in our email Brian? So that kit # 27, should we also buy that baffle hose that doesnt come with that kit.? THis is what they say about that hose

"Some applications [LT1 F-body, GTP, Cavalier, etc.] have a pump module with a flexible plastic hose in it. About the only way to get a pump in there is to destroy the flex hose. Have no fear; We have that flex hose. It's only $2.50 from APE."

IMHO I would return the 255 pump, I am very unhappy with mine, my 0.02.

Is the vortech good for high HP cars? I dont want that if it flows less than the 255 I guess.

IIRC the stock pump flows 70-80 LPH, and at the 55-60 psi mark will easily flow enough for 250whp+, 255 is what Z06's come with and they run 800whp+ on stock pumps... so even the 190lph is OVERKILL... I understood that and still got the 255, and I regret it, I would rather have watied an extra month and got the right pump.
