crankshft weight

Does anyone know the most you can take off of a stock 2.4 crankshaft. we have been trying it and the most we have got off is just short of ten pounds. was wondering if anyone has tried more then that

You do realize the counterweights are there for a reason, right?

I don't see how else you could possible have gotten 10 lbs from our crankshaft.

we put that crankshaft in a 2.3 havnt had a problem with it yet the hard part was getting the ring on for the sensor. we have 3 others ones with about 8 pounds taking off and there still running. our cars our race only. we did have one blow up it did bent the crankshft had to throw it away. i will have to get a pic of one when we rebuilt one of the motors. but most of the v8 engines we do dont have really anything for counter wieghts so we just got rid of them along with the balence shafts with the oil pump change.

i might have the one that was the blowen up car i will get a pic of it. all we did was take of the counter wieghts. the engine runs rough at idle but after you get up to about 2500 it smoothes out very nice.

hmmm, could u shave off say like 1-5lbs without having any problems?

i would like to shave as much off my rotating assembly as i can-reliably though.

1st step is a light flywheel, the result is similar. Spend money on a flywheel first.

I have a very light 2.3 forged Q4 crank (in a box).

Most 90 degree IL4's are naturally in balance. Justin what are you doing to verify the balance factor?

Light cranks are great, but it depends on the application.

nothing they are very well balenced i just notice a small vibration when at an idle but we havnt had any problems yet but like i said we only use our cars for racing no street driving. but total we have over 5000 miles of racing miles and no problems with the crank. the crank i have a pic of is the one where when we changed the oil pump to a 2.3 oil pump the plug for the old oil passage came out while racing. that is the reason why that crank got messed up. the one other picture is in our shop of my car.

not for me thanks... i'll keep my strong crank... even when an engine blows, if the crank is BENT, you know you did something you shouldnt have.

i have blowen up on with a stock crank to it bent also. it did make a really big differance on my car i would say it was at least the same as when i put the aluminum flywheel in.

you need a place to host the pic. like photobucket.com
then get the URL of the pic and then come here and click on the icon on the left of the smiley face. then go from there. but make sure you hit the preveiw button to make sure you did it right

Well as looks go it seems you've taken the most you can out of it, at least the most I've ever seen and I'm sure thats the most anybody around the org has ever taken off so I'm not sure you're gonna get any advise about how to take more off from around here. You might try the quad4 forums you might have more luck there.

I can tell you right now that it isn't balanced. The rods, bearings, pistons, rings and wrist pin all have to be factored in to balance a crank. Even without those, I can tell that you are heavy on the rod journal side. But, as long as you are only doing this in race applications and not worried about reliability, then more power to ya, bro.

this kind:

and damn i must say... that would be a ton of work to get that much off the crank, you guys do some amazing work, i cannot wait to have you do my 2.3 HO intake cam.

we did take in the pistons and rods and rings and pins when we balanced it. the only down fall is some vibration while at an idle. i think it akes about 20 hours of machine work to get it that far.

do you think u could just shave off a little, say like 5 lbs and stay within the "comfortable" side of things?

hell, even if you could shave off 1lb it would be worth it in my eyes.

five pounds im sure you can do very comfortably.
i want to thank everybody on here and for the info i know that we would not be as far as we are now if it wasnt for everybody. when we started two years ago all that we knew was v8s from truck and tractor pulling. we learned more from this forum then any other site. we completly build our engines ourselfs so if there are any queston on other stuff that we might be able to do you can email me or post something. thanks
