Stock 5spd faster than my auto with a couple mods
Thursday, December 28, 2006 5:12 PM
My cousin came down to my house today to get my clear corners and carbon tails off of me. Well we decided to go out and compare performance on the car. We lined up and took off. I got a jump on him but by the time I hit 35-40Mph he was starting to pull on me and pass me. I have a Megan racing catback, Prothane lower mount and am lowered on H&R springs. Should I have been able to out run him or does this sound about right? by 75MPH his rear bumper was at my front tire.

usually unless the auto has a auto trans intercepter or a b&m shift plus... the 5 speed will take it without any trouble if the driver is good. But doesn't mean that all 5 speeds are better than autos. Autos can be deadly mean, and consistant is the biggest key there... lol... but yea get a Shift + or a Auto Trans Intercepter and you'll be much better off.

Well, Lowering springs aren't going to make you faster
I don't know how much that lower mount is really going to help espeically while your already rolling
And all you have is the cat back?

I'd say it turned out right...

we went from a complete stop up to 80. I know that the springs usually will help on take off usually if they're stiffer. I just could not believe how much more pull he had. He's not the greatest of driver either.

your catback doesn't give you as much power as you think. your mount helps you a little bit off the line. the springs, eh. your auto sucks up more power than a manual, and also the manual's gears are closer together, helping him outrun you. its life, but its not like he took a lot from you.

I was also thinkin I'm running a 215-60-15 tires all the way around. that could have taken a lil bit away to. I might look into the autotrans interceptor and if I can come across a yank converter some time soon I might do that. I would think that would help alot.

Prothane lower mount

probaly dont anything. no one really knows. lets say 2 hp.

am lowered on H&R springs

adds nothing. and judging from your profile you have them on stock shocks too. that there dont help either. and can actually hurt you

and the fact that you were street racing is dumb. and will probaly this thread locked

autotrans interceptor are not being made anymore. B&M shift plus are still around

don't forget, HPT also gives you control over the transmission and is better than the shift+ and the interceptor..

not to mention it gives you control over the engine as well

The road we were on is 0 population that no one uses and is actually closed to traffic.

Also his car is a 2200 5spd. 02 LS as where mine is a 01 base auto. I wasn't saying that my mods really did much but just amazed, he had a speaker box in the trunk as well.

I understand what everyone is sayin for mods. a tune up would prolly help my car out alot. it's got 81,000 on it. I'm gonna do a new thermostat plugs wires and fuel filter. I wanna do the HP tuners but I have no one that could tune my car for me locally, seeing as I'm in delaware and there is no one anywhere near close to me.

my best pass was a 16.0 , 59mm tb , intake , cat back , shift plus , header , mounts

best in my g/fs 02 eco 5spd 15.4 , stock , firends 02 z24 sedan 5spd , intake , mounts , 15.07

the 5spd doesnt eat up the power the auto does

hehe o1cav... ill tell ya what, if he only gained basically a car on you... thats not bad. hell man, take out ur spare tire and jack and you probly could have gotten it back.
lol, or go change ur oil, plugs and put in a new air filter and BANG i bet u would win!!!! lmao

I just stated the tune up just because it needs one anyway. I'm not sayin that I would get any performance out of it. hell it needs plugs wires o2 sensor... the thermostat is stuck partially open. I'm gonna get a autotrans interceptor soon. I know the shift plus can turn the trac off light on as well.

Is there anything you can do about the light? I just got the B&M Shift+ from my sister for Christmas, lol...

HPT pros (for transmission control):

-no external devices to mount
-availability of product isn't a problem (isn't the interceptor not made anymore?)
-no need to constantly change settings and parameters.
with HPT, you can program your car to only shift aggressively under wide open throttle, therefore you're not running 100% line pressure all the time for super hard and fast shifts, while killing your trans at the same time.

With HPT, you can set the car to behave normally until you drop the hammer, in which case the trans will shift hard and fast, the way you want it to when racing.

Also, you can disable other features of the VCM like 'abuse mode' and 'torque limiters', therby releasing more power.

the only con is price and you need a laptop to use it, but night and day better IMO.

no, its the fact that the auto amounts to more drivetrain loss, gearing has nothing to do with it.

yea I want to do the HPtuners but just dont know how or what to tune or for the fact of having $500-600 plus needing the laptop to.

damn man... HPT is appealing to me MUCH more now.

also, with the addition of TTR's auto mount (cant wait for this to come out), us auto owners should be getting up there with the 5spd's in putting power down, im sure the 5spd will always rein superior to the auto, but at least were getting closer!

Want my worthless pair of pennies? I think you are looking in the wrong spot for power. Springs won't make you much quicker. They might help you a bit on launch to keep the front tires from slipping, but thats it. Motor/trans mounts will help get torque to the ground fast, but after 60' its not going to help much. Maybe a bit at each shift. The catback is nice, but you won't really benefit from it much until you do intake and headers.

I know a header high flow cat, intake, maybe get another 56MM throttle body and it might run somewhat better. My main concern right now though is I think the rear crank seal is leaking and I really dont feel like pulling the motor to get to it.

pulling the motor on a auto is less than a 4 hour job
