eco intake manifold question
Wednesday, January 10, 2007 3:32 PM
ok i dont know if this is a dumb question or not but here it goes...i was online looking at ecotec parts....i ended up running across the chevy cobalt built by whitfield and gm... http://www.gm.com/company/gmtunersource/html/jason.htm ...and saw that he was using the 2.2lt eco..pretty much the same eco i have in my cavy...i looked at the intake manifold he was using and wanted to see if i could get that...well i found it (aluminum fabricated intake manifold, part number 88958629)...but it says its for the cobalt...is there that big of a difference in the two motors that it wouldent work?

it might not clear the radiator support.

the main thing is it WONT work with the factory pcm.
Its for race cars, not streetcars.

the intake manifold on your car is good up to 400hp

this might be a dumb question but why woulednt it work with the factory pcm?...and what would make a car a "race car" compaired to a "street car"?...that cobalt is a "streetcar" that runs 9s.....he still can take that car down town and cruze with it....

iv already noticed that it prolly wont clear the radiator support but im sure there is a way around that...but its prolly not worth the extra work when im prolly not gnna be running more then 400 hp...

http://www.gmpartsdirect.com has it for $880 just go there and type it in you will see... thats WAY to much money for a intake manifold... you should just get the saab intake manifold ($150 or so from the dealer) which flows better then our stock manifold to begin with and get it ported and polished and bored out and this and that and ceramic coated inside and out and you will still spend less that 880, less then half

image of the manifold

p.s. that thread says 250, but i called my local saab dealer and they told me 150, i dont kno if the price dropped or whatever

yea thats awsome...i knew about the SAAB one but never really looked into it...the only real reason i was looking at the other one was because the throttle body mounted onto the side of the manifold instead of the top...and it kinda looked cooler (haha)..but i will prolly end up just goin with the SAAB one...

hey thats my car.......well that pic anyway.

as far as the saab manifold........its good to about 12psi max and then it really starts to heat up. to to it having small runners.

if you notice that article on that cobalt the radiator is gone and the round part of the intake can not be seen very easy

and they have more room then the cavs do

Also from the build book on that very manifold from gm

Quote:

The intake manifold developed for ECOTEC engine up to
1000 hp for off-highway use is a sheet metal fabricated style
intake manifold. The intake manifold is manufactured by
Bates Engineering in conjunction with GM Racing. The
intake manifold is made from 6061 Aluminum and is
completely TIG welded. The intake manifold utilizes a 75
mm OE throttle body from a GM 5.3L V-8 engine. This
manifold is used on the Phase5 drag cars and the Bonneville
race cars. It will also fit on a Cobalt, Cavalier and Sunfire with
production engine location. It will not function properly with
the production engine management system.

I have to check if any of the dealers will give me a discount on parts... some give parts discounts, some give labor discounts... it varies... I gotta find the I.D. Book (Incredible Discounts Book) And look through it to see what places do give discounts... not even sure if I can get one if any... but if I can I'll definately hook ya up man =) Especially since I'm going to prolly get that header off ya and ur giving me a great price for it.

So did anyone actually get the flow tests or a dyno comparison done?

Also take into acct your adding weight by replacing a plastic part with a metal one not to mention metal heat soaks worse than plastic, so any gain if there is even one is prob negated

this is true but would it not be a better platform for power if done correctly like port and polished as well as ceramic coated ???

I'm going to do it cause I like the idea that it goes directly into the engine instead of down & then up like the normal plastic one... which is good for nitrous applications (i.e. me, lol) Plus the idea that you can port polish & coat it is a nice touch too... =)

how will the saab manifold work on a N/A car? right now i just have a few basic bolt-ons, stock cams and head, ported OEM plastic manifold. would the saab manifold possibly show me any gains? well gains worth bothering with anyways...

ok, so here are the important questions:

1 will it work with common aftermarket intake systems like K&N, AEM, etc? (looks like it)

2 does it use the stock J-body sensors and brake booster line? (i dont see the MAP sensor in the above pic, should be on the top of the manifold)
