ceramic coating pistons and head ????

Has anyone ever done this ?? I've searched for ceramic coating pistons but unable to find any topics on it here ..

I've seen it on V8's but have not seen it on here .. If you have had it done , how did it look ?and have you had the motor apart after it was done ?

Heat coatings are some of the best things you can do to help an engine deal with heat....

I have heat coating done to all parts of the inside of the motor where combustion occurs - most piston makers such as weisco ceramic coat the skirts but never the crowns.... I had mine fully coated as well as the combustion chambers in the head.

Quite a good thing to do, make sure a reputable shop is doing the work.

Good luck!

I've been coating my own since '97. I use Techline coatings. They supply many of the shops that apply coatings professionally.

I've had engines apart afterward to make internal changes. I had to sandblast the thermal barrier coating out of a pair of cylinder heads for the machine shop. They tried steel shot at 100 psi but that didn't do it. I had to use brand new "black beauty" with the sandblaster tip about 1/2 inch from the chambers and it still took a bunch of time. Tough stuff, for sure. I've coated intakes, exhaust manifolds, piston crowns and skirts, bearings, and valves. If you're doing it yourself then prep work is the key to success. If you're paying someone, make sure they're a good shop. If you have any racetracks locally, find the shops the local boys are using.

Thanks, I checked out the link you posted good info. I was hoping to see some pictures of this done on J's motors. It always looks different when the pictures are taking by individuals.

thanks guys for the info

I had this done on a motor back in the early 80's.. but never took it back apart to inspect it afterwards.

this is on my list of things to do now that I'm building a 2.4

Parts are on there way

Is ceramic coating the best to go with? Also what things do you recommend being ceramic coated? I may look into this if I can afford to build up my motor.

The ceramic thermal barrier coatings are usually applied to items which you want to prevent from heating or which you don't want to transfer heat away from. Valves, piston tops, combustion chambers, intake and exhaust ports are all good candidates for TBC.

Lots of stuff to read there.
