Engine mounts + tranny mounts better?
Sunday, February 04, 2007 8:46 PM
Just wondering if any of you have tried just engine mounts and then added tranny mounts in ? and did it stop some of the vibrations? or was it even worse?

as im putting my engine mounts into my sister cavalier and she is wanting to put trany mounts in and i never did that with my sunfire so i dont know if it would balence things out or not... let me know...

Their is going to be a bit of viberations no doubt, Ive got Rk upper poly incert, Rk Lower poly mount, Its nice a stiff tightness then stock, I noticed with the stock mounts their is no viberations, Cause the rubber mounts dont allow it to viberate, It allows the engine movement with stock one. No engine movement with the poly.

i did the ttr upper. no vibrations at all. way better than the RK. then did the trans bushings. didnt notice much but im sure there is some improvement.

I notice the viberations alot more cause Ive had front end crash way back. Plus Ive got the lower motor mount under the poly incert.

Trust me get the turbo tech racing upper mount. it does not vibrate even close to the RK sport one. there is almost none if any vibrations. the reason RK's vibrates is because they use 2 small bushings. while TTR uses 1 big bushing. and if you get one, get them all, if she is going for performance or what not.

Like i said i went from stock to TTR upper, Lower from TTR, Trans mounts, and control arm bushings. all together, my car does not vibrate one bit. once you do the upper to get rid of 90% of engine roll, the rest are to eliminate wheel hop and such.

We designed this mount around having minimal engine movement, and having minimal vibrations. We tried to get both of best worlds and it turned out great!

i'm going to say just what vince has said. Get rid of the RkSport mount! Get a TTR mount, i have it and there is virtually no vibrations with it at all....it is amazing, and i've yet had time to install my TTR tranny mounts as well so i'll leave that up to aaron and vince

wow i didnt realize how many people were having problems w/ the RKSport stuff. Ive got both the rk upper and lower motor mount and have absolutely no vibrations at all. weird. To Josh..i have heard from people around on the boards that when the trans mount go in, it mellows out the engine mounts.

no offense but being as it use to be my car and i know its an auto transmission no one makes mounts for it as it is one bracket and there is no aftermarket support for it, i just replaced that mount in june and auto tranny mounts basically never need to be replaced but as i did all the mounts i decided i would replace that one as well. As well all the mounts are brand new and the upper and lower mounts are both poly filled, the mounts that come in kits look like this right?

well those are for a 5-speed transmission, the auto trans mount is located just behind the splash guard on the driverside tire, its was hella hard changing it but we did and there was no way of filling it, basically you'd have to fab up something if you wanted to brace that transmission anymore but i wouldnt advise on it.

all that being said providing you didn't put a 5-speed on the motor.

thanks for all that and yes it may have been your car, but only thing thats in/on it from when you had it is the body kit... got a new engine, 5spd trany with LSD, and lots more already... and we are looking for a actual replacement mount not a filled in OEM one.. although we might go back to the lower engine one you had in, as it seemed to give a nice feel but no vibrations... we will see..

I noticed vibes when i put my RK lower mount in over a year ago, and when i got both Trans mounts in, the Vibes went away. Since ive got the TTR upper Mount, when its cold like this, i do get Vibes, but its not bone jarring. If anything i can feel that the motor's cold, and it rattles the dash some till it warms up, then all is fine.

Would you guys say that there is some gain in performance torque wise by putting in stiffer mounts? Because the engine is twisting less in the engine bay, it can apply that force to the wheels, making more torque right?

I love the ttr upper mount. Wouldn't trade it for any other. no vibrations at all. NONE

Josh, while my experience obviously only counts for so much as we're talking about 2 different vehicles, when i installed just the center "dogbone" poly mount on the beetle, there was a pretty big increase in vibrations... Not enough for me to give a crap, but enough to notice. After I got the other two mounts in poly also, there was quite honestly less vibration than stock. And actually, now that I remember, the Skwirl had the same experience with his cavalier. I believe its because the vibrations are worse when one end of the drivetrain is allowed to move more freely than the other... it makes sense anyway. I would always advise trying to do all the mounts in poly though for the simple reason that uneven twisting/turning can load/unload drivetrain parts in strange ways and angles and can cause a lot of inconsistencies that may amount to anything from poor driver feedback all the way to full blown part failure.

Poly bushings will exacerbate the "Getrag Groan" If you already have that, I have taken my lower poly mount out, I am thinking about trying the TTR tranny mounts next.

Can someone post a thread on installing the getrag tranmission mounts. I have searched and there really isn't much on the topic as far as detailed install.
