Poly Mounts and Horrible vibrations!?!?!
Sunday, February 11, 2007 12:23 AM
OK. so ive got the upper and lower poly mounts from karo at Carcustoms. ive had them for a year and the vibrations have been tolerable. but lately ive just been getting annoyed with the vibrations and rattles the mounts cause. so ive got a couple questions
1. What mount causes the most vibes. upper or lower. i dont remember. i think its the lower
2. im thinking of getting the TTR upper mount but im not sure about how much vibrations that gives. does it give any extra vibes compared to the stock mount? to the Poly mount insert?
3. if i decide to get rid of bothe upper and lower mounts and go back to stock imma need new OE mounts. I can get the lower from work for 25 bucks my cost. but the upper is something like 170 through the dealer. i was reading somewhere you can buy just the rubber and chisel the rivets off the old mount and the new rubber comes with bolts. is this true. and if so where can i get it and for how much?

Thanks alot guys.

It is the upper that cause the most, but if you get the TTR upper it could (not saying it will) cause more because it is more solid. Truly I think your a wuss if you can't deal with the vibes, they are not that bad.

no its not always the upper , each car is different

best is to try which is less for your vehicle , if you have a 5spd you might want to add the trans mounts , as they make a decent change in the way it vibrates

another choice albeit more costly is to get hp tuners , and adjust your idle speed

which is best for you only you can figure it out

thanks guys and im not a "wuss" you sit there and listen to everything in your car vibrate and rattle everytime you come to a stop. and then tell me if your annoyed or not. the vibs dont bug me personally. its listening to the rattles that annoys me. and i think ill just take out my upper insert and see what happens. if it dont fix anything ill put it back in and replace the lower. ill prolly end up replacing bothe. oh well.

the TTR solid mount has much less vibes then the insert. MUCH less. and a hell of a lot less then the Rk Sport mount due to the single large bushing in comparision to the small 2 bushings on the RK version.

Actually that is not true so good thing you put in your disclaimer. ill try to explain to you the best i can...

The Rk sport design uses VERY small poly bushings and uses 2 of them. the TTR uses one big bushing which gives more room for shock absorbtion. A friend of mine has both the TTR and RK on 2 different cars. he got rid of the RK on his better car for the TTR mount. I ride in his RK mounted cav and it vibrates a heck of a lot more than mine with the TTR, Just because its a solid bushing people think its going to be worse. .. but actually its that much more bushing to take the shock. Like i said RK used really small bushings so the shock radiates through the little bushings to the rest of the car. the TTR stops most of them in the bushing.

Sorry need to make a correction. I meant to say lower mount causing mre of the vibes, not the upper. I still think the TTR upper would have more vibes than a factory with a insert.
As far as things rattling in your car, well fix those things. I have them happen, and I have fixed them.

You drive a Cavalier....your car is gonna vibrate whether you take the mounts out or leave them in.

I wish you were local so you could sit in my car. I have all the motor mounts for my car. TTR upper, TTR(prothane dogbone) lower, Trans mounts, Control arm bushings and very stiff suspension and my car does not vibrate. I had the insert on my 2200 and it vibrated terribly. i mean horribly bad. Get the TTR, you wont regret it. plus it comes in almost any color you could ever want.

The function of any motor mounts is to stop the motor from rocking to prevent wheel hop. It does just that. i went from terrible wheel hop to putting on my TTR upper mount and COMPLETELY ELIMINATED my second gear wheel hop. Then i got the lower and the rest of the bushings just for the extra prevention of wheel hop.

Ill break it down the best i can...

Leave stock mount in...
lots of wheel hop, no vibrations, cheapest route
RK Sport Mount...
more expensive, less wheel hop then stock, comes only red, lots of vibrations
TTR upper mount...
Little to none vibrations, much less wheel hop, cheaper than RK Sport, comes in any color, with many different color bushings

just trust me on this one. i hope more people chime in on this that have the TTR mount.

Well actually the TTR one more is expensive than the "insert" RK also makes a solid one but i dont think for your motor.

just spend the money, do it right, and get the TTR one...Pick the mount

Well I can relate to what Wojo is saying, Ive got the upper and lower Rk sport mounts, I know the rattling sound at idle in drive, cause my cavy is 4 sod auto, They are great for tighness, I notice the difference. power transfer, Their is times my car idles nice with no rattles, Basically I think their is more rattles with the automatic cars then 5 spd's, On my friends cavy 2000 2.2L 5spd, It only viberates in the steering column a little, Ive had previous front end damage, That got fixed before I bought the car. Plus with the automatic's Our tranny mount is really a chatter sound over time, I may also think of my stocker to get re installed back in.

exactly. im just going to buy the OEM mounts and say the hell with it. i would rather have a car that i enjoy driving than a car that i dread. thats why i mod my car. so i can enjoy it. thanks for everyones help. ill prolly get the TTR mount later on based on everyone elses word

Again, I find the TTR Solid mount over the Insert has MUCH MUCH MUCH less vibrations. Not quite stock, but near.

If you wanna keep the mounts either put up w/ the vibes or get the TTR mount.

Vince, he has the 2200, so the RKSport full replacement has nothing to do w/ this post.

ive got both mounts in mine and at idle nothing vibrates.... maybe you should try tightening dash bolts and other various bolts.

not sure what your problem is...

my car idles at 600. sometimes it will idle at 900 and wen it does nothing vibrates

i got the upper TTR mount and the RK sport lower, my dash vibrates like mad at 700-900RPM, its a bit annoying, when the weather warms up im gonna fix the rattles with some foam and tightening down the screws.. i may also get someone with HPtuners to lower my Idle to 600 as it idles at 700 currently.

for now i just turn up the stereo and i hear no more rattles..

It vibrates that bad because it is idleing so low. my car idles at 900 and i think i might bump it to 1000 dunno, no real need to... but the 2200's must be bad for vibes.
