the car has 117k on it i replased the water pump right when i bought the car at 92K then i got new bearings at 101k and i just replaced the Tranny at 115k and it started to make this knockin sound so i kind of thought it eather could be the motor knocking or one of use might have for got to tightin the Flywheel all the way. so i checked it and all the bolts are tight and then i called a guy that overhauls motors for a living and then i called Tim O-neil Chevrolet and they all said that it wasnt worth fixing. i dont really want the car eny more but i have nothing else to drive b/c im still restoring my impala and so i can drive that so im stuck driving my old gas gusler. do u guys think i should overhaul it or just find a used one

id say rebuild it, u can get an OEM engine kit from IPP for about 500 bucks, and that includes everything u need. Rings, gasket set, cam bearings, main bearings, rod bearings, everything. Or if your wanting to build it up a little bit they also offer a more performance kit that runs for about a grand that includes all that plus ultra-lite wrist pins, forged pistons, and all that jazz. And especially if u can do all the work yourself, ud be money ahead i think.

And as far as the 2.3 and 2.4 being crappy motors. I dont agree with that at all. I have 154,000 miles on mine and the only reason im rebuilding it is cuz im doing a performance build. The only thing that that sucks on em is the main bearings and rod bearings, other than that, theyre a good engine.

Never ask a dealership about rebuilding an engine......... 9 times out of 10, they will try to sell you a remaned engine....... doesnt matter what engine you have. While they might make more money off you rebuilding the current engine (compaired to swapping in a reman), its time consuming, and ties up a service bay that could be making money on other jobs. They make their money by billing more hours then they work.

The 2.4 has 2 faults....... first, water pump longevity, or the lack there of. The second are some years are more prone to spinning rod bearings then others.

The 2.3 has had some faults as well....... the waterpump idler bearing has been known to fail. They even have been known to spin a rod bearing or two (while not as common as the 2.4, and could be caused by careless owners). Then there is the fact that just about every 2.3 head has been known to crack at some point, or blow the head gasket.

With that being said, they are no less/more reliable then any other engine from any other manufacturer.

googled = http://www.importperformanceparts.net/

But I have some real doubts about the prices and parts.
a re-ring kit for a 2.4 is listed as having:
- Rings
- Gaskets
- Rod Bearings
- Main Bearings

which sounds reasonable and it costs $390.

But the complete rebuild kit includes:
- Rings
- Gaskets
- Cam Bearings
- Oil Pumps
- Freeze Plugs
- Lifters
- Pre-lube
- Timing Set
- Pistons

- Rod Bearings
- Main Bearings
(No Cam)

And it costs only $$449
??? All the parts I put in bold for only $160 more???
Add to the questions that 2.4s do not have cam bearings or freeze plugs.

ya know, i never really paid attention to them including cam bearings and freeze plugs, this is actually the first time i ever looked at the OEM kit. That is kinda worrysome, but a call too see what thats all about could maybe clear it all up, maybe it was a typo...hmm.
