ho cam question
Sunday, February 18, 2007 6:48 PM
been searching for about 2 hours and read lots of post on it. now the only question i have left is do the springs need to be changed? i know its recommended by many people but a few say they have no issues on the factory 2.4 springs. i know the ps hex needs to be added as well as the cam sensor pad. also needed is either the cam housings or have work done to them to have it fit, amongst other things, i just cant find a solid answer on the springs. any help on the subject is welcome especially from those that have tried. thanks again.

On the stock 2.4 cam towers you need to bore out the lifters to accept the 35mm HO ones, LD9 ones are 33mm. If you stick with the LD9 towers then thats it, I would also recommend the HO springs. They are better and while you are in there you might as well do it.

aren't the towers and housing just different words meaning the same thing? if so i will get them so that problem is solved. also thanks for replying to the spring question, but what happens? do the srpings bind up? or what is the major issues with them? thanks again.

Yea I used them interchangeably, sorry. I haven't really done this yet but everything I remember reading said to use the HO springs. They were designed for the lift of the HO cams, and high RPM use as well. I don't look at it as a 'have to' kind of thing. More of a get to b/c they are better in every respect.

true true, i dont really plan on raising the rpm limiter of this car, so maybe it wont be such an issue, though the lift still might be. i am trying to keep it fairly mild maybe the ho is too much, but it would be fun.

HO springs have a higher spring rate (aka tighter). They require more force to push them down. You probably think that is bad, but imagine if you go with too low of a spring rate (aka looser), the camshaft lobe loses contact with the lifter and the valve "floats." Not good. I would highly reccomend HO springs with HO cams, but I am no expert on this, so I can't say 100% whether or not the LD9 springs would indeed cause valve float with HO cams.

Then don't bother wasting your time and money on installing HO cams. Stick to secret cams at least. HO cams need a higher rev limit to be effective.

"Youth in Asia"...I don't see anything wrong with that.

I would agree with Brian. If your going for mild then get the secret cams. They work very well with the stock computer and everything else. Just look at the cam makers, they make cams that are very close to the secret cam specs for their stage 1 cams. I haven't heard anything bad about the secret cams, a very safe bet on them. My .02 cents
