Magnaflow muffler on an automatic?

Is it worth putting a Magnaflow muffler or any performance muffler on a automatic car or will it just sound really bad?

This is the muffler I am looking at to put on my 2003 Sunfire(automatic):

Double Wall, Angle Cut
2.25" Inlet 4" Diam. Tip
7" Tip Length
5" x 8" Oval Body
14" Muffler Body Length

ok, explain why exactly you think the transmission has ANYTHING to do with the sound of the exhaust.

*sits and waits*

autos require a different load to get them moving and while going up and down through the gears and will sound different than manual , wide open will be close to the same sound

do yourself a favor and get atleast a 18" case length muffler , the 14 will be louder , and more anoying

automatic 4 cylinders never seem to sound as good as stick cars IMO. think because the take alot longer to go through each gear. 4 cylinders seem to sound best when they wind up fast.

yall do know the sound is from the ENGINE not the transmission, the only thing different is the fact that with a manual car, the driver controls how high the engines revs (to a certain point). In general though, a 2.4 or 2.2L will sound the same regardless of transmission due to the fact that the firing order dictates the sound of the motor, as well as many other factors.

So I wont be accused of not playing well with others, yes a performance muffler is worth it on any engine, period. As long as it is a high-flow designed muffler regardless of transmission you will gain performance.

An automatic has just as much potential as a manual.

its the load for the auto that causes the change in tone

its why the manuals take less hp from the motor from the motor to turn , vs a auto taking more

There is a difference is tone, With a manual transmission you can control the tone of the exhaust longer then an auto, from stop to drive when u hammer the gas on a auto, you can hear the high tone back down on shifts, Or some have a drown sound, Thats why I got rid of my Cannon (fart can) pipe, I went with Walker quite stock muffler, Just got sick of the drown sound. My buddy has that Magnaflow muffler posted above, It sounds great, Nice tone.

Add a resonator and it shouldn't be that bad.

I like the sound of my exhaust under WOT, and I have a Magnaflow cat and muffler.

Actually it's the difference between the clutch in a manual and the torque converter in the auto that makes the difference in drivetrain efficiency and how much power each transmission transmits to the wheels. The clutch, when engaged, is directly connected to the engine's crankshaft while the torque converter steels a few more hp because it requires fluid forced through it's internal turbines to turn it and is not directly connected.

The transmission actually has nothing to do with what the engine's exhaust note sounds like. The pitch of the note will change differently between transmissions because of how they are engaged from a dead stop and how they shift.

And to answer the question, yes it's worth it to put a higher flowing exhaust and muffler on an automatic equipped car.

That looks like the same Magnaflow that came on the RK Sport catback I have. It's not quite as deep sounding as some and a little on the loud side without a resonator. Not terrible though. Decent tone if you don't mind hearing it... Have it on a 2004 Cavalier auto.

May sound even better if you're putting it on the stock pipe. There was a small resonator on mine and I think it was 1/4" smaller than what I have now. The muffler seems to sound better with more velocity running through it. Seems very good performance-wise.

does anyone know of a muffler that increaes flow with a close to stock sound? i was thinking of the magnaflow but i wanted a quieter tone. i used to have a fart can on a 94 cav auto before i got my 01 and it sounded like garbage. i just want a close to stock sound with a performance gain.

From what I have heard the Dynomax Super Turbo muffler has a sound a little louder than stock with higher flow as well.
(there is a post in Photos and Media with a sound clip)

The key to a good sounding exhaust setup is a resonator, without one it will sound like crap.

Agreed when it comes to our cars. Other cars may not use resonators, and sound just as good. Just the luck of a Jbody.

I have a magna flow muffler on my auto (with a res. along of course) And I love the sound.

I just had a 40 series Flowmaster muffler installed on my '03 Cavalier and I have an automatic trans. I also had a 10" stainless steel, double walled exhaust tip from Summit installed to. Nice burble sound decelerating, quiet at idle, and thunderous floored. It is just glorious. I'm sure a magnaflow would be no different.

Get a good resinator, it will make a difference in tone! I simply bought the 28 inch res from auto zone for 24 bucks.

Watch out there nah!

If I bought this muffler and bought an ordinary stainless steel tip along with it would it be quieter? I don’t think its straight through and it's just an 2" inlet and outlet. It would cost me the same so it’s between the Magnaflow stainless muffler with tip or the satin stainless steel muffler and I would buy a good tip.
